No. 1 Eagles Hold Off Late Rally, Defeat No. 21 Hokies
April 13, 2019 | Lacrosse
Backed by four Eagles with hat tricks, the Eagles won their final road trip of the regular season
BLACKSBURG, Va. –  The No. 1 Boston College lacrosse team prevented a late second-half comeback from No. 21 Virginia Tech with a full-team effort as the Eagles secured the win, 16-13, Saturday afternoon in Blacksburg. Graduate student Kenzie Kent, seniors Sam Apuzzo and Dempsey Arsenault, and junior Cara Urbank each tallied three goals in the effort. Apuzzo led all scorers, assisting on three goals in addition to her own three for six points on the day.  Junior Sheila Rietano added two points of her own while classmate Kate Taylor and sophomore Maggie Casey added one goal apiece in the win. The Eagles out-drew the Hokies, 19-12, as Apuzzo, Arsenault, Rietano and senior defender Elizabeth Miller each won control of four possessions. Apuzzo and freshman Jenn Medjid each caused two turnovers in a defensive battle, as the Eagles caused nine of the Hokies' 15 turnovers.
The Eagles came ready to play as they put up two goals courtesy of Apuzzo and Arsenault before two minutes could pass in the opening frame. Following the opening outburst for BC, the Hokies answered back and took an eventual 4-3 lead over the top team in the country. Head Coach Acacia Walker-Weinstein called a game-changing timeout as the Eagles regained their footing out of the quick break, going on a 4-0 scoring run to hold a comfortable lead at the end of the half. Kent and Urbank each tallied four points through the first half, as Kent scored once and assisted on three others and Urbank had a first-half hat trick and one assist. The Eagles took 16 shots to VT's 11 while every shot on goal ended in a score in the opening 30 minutes.Â
The Eagles dominated coming out of the halftime break, going on a three-goal run to double their lead to six. At the halfway point of the frame, the Eagles led by eight goals for their largest margin of the contest. Following a late Hokies goal, the Eagles switched sophomore goalkeeper Abbey Ngai for senior Lauren Daly before Virginia Tech went on a five-goal run to round out the contest, led by two goals each from Emma Harden and Paige Petty, but couldn't find the groundwork needed to complete the comeback.Â
