No. 8 Friars Pull Away From Eagles in Third Period
March 07, 2019 | Men's Hockey
PROVIDENCE, R.I. – No. 8 Providence snapped a scoreless tie on a 3-on-2 just 45 seconds into the third period and held off Boston College late for a 3-1 Hockey East victory to close the regular season on Thursday night at Schneider Arena.
BC wraps up the regular season at 10-11-3 and will be either the No. 7 or 8 seed in next weekend's Hockey East Quarterfinals. The Friars locked up the No. 2 seed with the win, improving to 21-9-6 and 14-7-3 in the league.
If New Hampshire earns at least a point against Northeastern on Friday night, Boston College will slip to eighth and face top-seeded UMass in the playoffs. A UNH loss at Matthews Arena would send the Eagles right back to Schneider Arena for a best-of-three against PC.
Michael Kim nearly opened the scoring early in the first period but rung the underside of the crossbar following a 2-on-1 rush with Ben Finkelstein. Both teams had unsuccessful power plays in a scoreless but fast-paced opening frame.
Goaltenders Joseph Woll (28 saves) and Hayden Hawkey (29 saves) preserved the 0-0 scoreline in the second period, but Providence finally broke through in the first minute of the third. Tyce Thompson skated into the slot during a 3-on-2 before wristing a shot blocker side to beat Woll.
The Friars earned another power play at the 3:21 mark and capitalized just 12 seconds in as Thompson found Josh Wilkins open for a backdoor one-timer in the right circle. The Friars cashed in again with the man advantage at 11:15 when Kasper Björkqvist finished a low one-timer off a centering feed from Jack Dugan after curling the net.
JD Dudek drew a goal back with 3:35 left on the clock when the senior followed his own rebound. BC pulled Woll for a 6-on-5 situation in the closing minutes and generated several chances, including a weak-angle attempt off the left post from Julius Mattila, but couldn't cut into the two-goal lead.
SCORING
• 0:45 3rd, PC Goal (0-1) | Thompson skated into the BC slot on a 3-on-2 and delayed before sending a wrist shot inside the left post to open the scoring
• 3:33 3rd, PC Goal (0-2) | Jacob Bryson faked a center-point shot and found Thompson in the low left circle; Thompson looked to the weak side and Wilkins fired a first-time effort past Woll's glove hand for a power play tally
• 11:15 3rd, PC Goal (0-3) | Dugan circled behind the BC net late in a power play and slid a pass into the low slot for Björkqvist, who quickly snuck a one-timer under Woll's pads to extend the lead
• 16:25 3rd, BC Goal (1-3) | Ron Greco's aggressive forecheck popped a loose puck to Dudek at the edge of the crease, and the senior banged home his own rebound to deny Hawkey a shutout
