No. 7 Providence Earns 5-4 Overtime Win to Open Quarterfinals
March 15, 2019 | Men's Hockey
PROVIDENCE, R.I. – Brandon Duhaime converted a rebound just 1:31 into overtime on Friday night, leading seventh-ranked Providence to a 5-4 victory over Boston College in Game 1 of the best-of-three Hockey East Quarterfinals at Schneider Arena.
The Eagles will try to save their season in Game 2 on Saturday night.
Duhaime followed a shot from Tyce Thompson early in overtime, banging home a rebound off the right pad of Joseph Woll (34 saves) from the left circle.
Julius Mattila had forced overtime for Boston College with just 1:36 remaining in regulation, finishing a loose puck at the right post with Woll on the bench for an extra skater.
The Friars opened the scoring less than two minutes into the first period when a pass deflected off Vimal Sukumaran's skate from the top of the crease. BC responded 33 seconds later with the first of three straight goals to seize control in the opening frame.
Marc McLaughlin tracked down a blocked shot with a diving forehand to beat Hayden Hawkey (25 saves) from the slot at 2:21. Christopher Grando then snuck a lengthy shot past Hawkey for an unassisted tally four minutes later, and Michael Kim finished a back door pass from Zach Walker at 8:39.
Providence drew a goal back with only four seconds left in the second period when Spenser Young tapped in the first of his two goals at the right post from fellow defenseman Jacob Bryson.
Young then tied the game four minutes into the third on the power play as he found space in the left circle for a routine finish. Another defenseman, Vincent Desharnais, gave PC its first lead since the opening minutes of the contest at 8:56 on a one-timer through Woll's five-hole during a 4-on-4.
BC pulled its junior netminder with 1:44 remaining following a Jerry York timeout and Mattila forced an extra session just eight seconds later. Oliver Wahlstrom and David Cotton assisted on the game-tying tally.
The Eagles closed the night 0-for-4 on the power play, while the Friars went 1-for-5.
