No. 1 Eagles Run Past No. 3 Tar Heels
March 23, 2019 | Lacrosse
The lacrosse team stays perfect with a dominant road win over No. 3 North Carolina
CHAPEL HILL, N.C.– The No. 1 Boston College lacrosse team had a dominant afternoon in Chapel Hill as they kick-started their conference stretch with an impressive 14-8 win over No. 3 North Carolina. The Eagles were backed by five goals from senior Sam Apuzzo and a standout performance from sophomore goalkeeper Abbey Ngai.
The Tar Heels hopped on the board first with a goal from Jamie Ortega, but the opening goal would prove to be their only lead of the contest. Shortly after, sophomore Jordan Lappin tied it up for the Eagles with a free position goal before junior Cara Urbank grabbed a pass from graduate student Kenzie Kent to give BC the lead. The Eagles never looked back as they began a 3-goal run where seniors Dempsey Arsenault and Sam Apuzzo combined to push the lead to 5-1. Ortega capitalized again for North Carolina, followed by another score from Marisa DiVietro. The opening frame wrapped up with a bit of back and forth action as the teams traded runs, but the visiting Eagles held up with an 8-5 score heading into the break.
To open up the closing half, Lappin tallied her second of the day and pushed the Eagles up to 9-5. Apuzzo did what she does best and pushed the BC lead even farther, adding two more goals before Taylor McDaniels added her second of the day for North Carolina. The Tar Heels found their footing as Gianna Bowe and Ortega added goals to cut the deficit, but it wasn't enough to match the Eagles' offensive efforts. To wrap up the game, Kent, Apuzzo and senior Taylor Walker added one more goal each to secure the win for Boston College.
