The lacrosse team heads to Chapel Hill for their highest-ranked opponent of the season
CHESTNUT HILL, Mass. – The No. 1 Boston College women's lacrosse team is set for their toughest competition so far this season in No. 3 North Carolina as the team heads to Chapel Hill to seek 2018 ACC Tournament revenge. First draw is set for noon on Saturday, March 23 at the new UNC Lacrosse & Soccer Stadium and will be featured on the ACC Network Extra.
The two teams have a lengthy history, dating back to 1997. The Tar Heels hold a 16-3 all-time record over BC. The conference rivals met twice last season: the Eagles took the win in the regular season, 17-11 in Newton, but suffered heartbreak in the ACC Championship game in Chapel Hill. UNC won 14-11 and handed the Eagles their first loss of the season, snapping a historic 19-game win streak.
Most recently, the Eagles are coming off of a convincing win over UAlbany. BC took the win, 17-9, backed by four goals from senior Sam Apuzzo and three each from Dempsey Arsenault and Kenzie Kent. Eight different Eagles found their way to the goal column while sophomore goalkeeper Abbey Ngai racked up a career-best 14 saves. The win kept BC's perfect record in-tact as they hold a 10-0 record so far on the season. Apuzzo (48), Arsenault (29), Kent (23) and junior Cara Urbank (23) are responsible for 123 of BC's 186 goals this season while the defensive squad is holding opponents to just 93 goals against the No. 1 Eagles.
Similarly, the Tar Heels most recently found a dominant win over Campbell, 16-5. UNC currently sits at No. 3 in the IWLCA, Inside Lacrosse and Nike/US Lacrosse national polls with an 8-1 record. Their only loss came from No. 2 Maryland, a 13-12 decision that needed extra time. The Tar Heels are out-scoring opponents 125-69 over their nine games this season, led by 33 goals from Jamie Ortega.
Following the top-3 matchup this weekend, the Eagles return home to continue conference play as they play host to No. 8 Virginia, Saturday, March 30 at noon for Youth Day.
