No. 1 Eagles Wrap Up Home Stretch With No. 24 USC
February 28, 2019 | Lacrosse
The Eagles have topped the Trojans in each of their four meetings to date
CHESTNUT HILL, Mass.– The No. 1 Boston College lacrosse team is set for just their second meeting with a nationally-ranked opponent as they play host to No. 24 Southern California tomorrow afternoon in Newton. First draw is set for 3:00 p.m. and will be featured on the ACC Network Extra.
Â
The Eagles, having maintained their No. 1 ranking throughout the season so far, have started with a perfect 5-0 record. Most recently, they toppled Dartmouth, 20-10, Wednesday afternoon in Newton. Three different players recorded at least three goals for the fourth time this season.
Â
Heading the doubled-up win for BC was a 10-point performance from senior captain Sam Apuzzo, who found the back of the net eight times and set up two of her teammates for scores. Her day put her alongside Covie Stanwick '15, with 309 career points – the best in Boston College history. She also currently sits atop the NCAA point-scorer leaderboard for this season. Sophomore goalkeeper Abbey Ngai made her first career starting appearance in between the pipes and pulled in 12 saves on the day – doubling her previous career-high of six.Â
Â
The Trojans are off to their second-best start in program history, currently holding a 3-0 record after defeating Hofstra, San Diego State and Jacksonville so far this season. Each of their wins has been by at least a four-goal lead.Â
Â
The Eagles and Trojans have met only four times over the series, first facing each other in 2014. BC has won each of the four contests – including a 20-14 win in the 2017 NCAA Quarterfinals.
Â
Following Friday's contest, the Eagles will face another ranked opponent – this time on the road as they head to No. 17 Navy.
