CHESTNUT HILL, Mass. – The No. 36 Eagles (9-1, 1-1 ACC) host a pair of ranked Carolina schools on the Heights this weekend as they welcome No. 2 North Carolina on Friday (Feb. 22) at 1 p.m. and No. 23 NC State on Sunday (Feb. 24) at 11 a.m. BC, which is a perfect 8-0 at home this year, is coming off its first loss of the season at No. 18 Virginia.
VIRGINIA RECAP
Boston College won the doubles point and had its chances in singles, but eventually fell 5-2 at 18th-ranked Virginia last Saturday in Charlottesville for its first loss in 10 matches this spring.
BC earned the doubles point following 6-4 victories from the teams of Yufei Long/Jackie Urbinati and Natasha Irani/Kylie Wilcox. Irani was the Eagles' lone victor in singles play as she beat Amber O'Dell in straight sets 6-1, 7-6 from the No. 4 slot.
Wilcox and Urbinati each went to the decisive third set in their matches before eventually falling in the No. 2 and 3 slots. Rookie Laura Lopez led Sofia Munera 4-0 in the first set but ended up dropping her match 6-4, 6-3, while Maria Ross pushed Hunter Bleser but lost a 6-1, 7-5 decision in No. 6 singles.
SCOUTING UNC
North Carolina (11-1) is the No. 2 team in the nation in this week's ITA rankings. The Tar Heels suffered their first loss to No. 1 Georgia 4-3 in the final match of the ITA National Indoor Championships in Seattle. UNC rebounded this week by sweeping UNC Greensboro and Appalachian State 7-0 at home.Â
Makenna Jones, Alexa Graham, and Sara Daavettila rank second, fifth, and sixth respectively in the most recent ITA singles rankings, while Jones and Cameron Morra sit fourth as a doubles team. As the top team in the country last year, North Carolina beat BC 5-2 in Chapel Hill.
SCOUTING NC STATE
The Wolfpack (8-2) dropped from 16th to 23rd in the national rankings following their first-ever appearance in the ITA Indoor Championship, where they fell to Georgia and host Washington. Last weekend, NC State defeated Utah (7-0) and James Madison (6-1) in convincing fashion at home.Â
Alana Smith and Anna Rogers rank 10th in the nation as a doubles pair, while Rogers is 25th in singles. The last time Boston College hosted NC State in 2016, the Wolfpack came back to beat the Eagles 4-3 after losing the doubles point on the Heights.
