Eagles Fall to No. 2 UNC Despite Historic Singles Upsets

CHESTNUT HILL, Mass. – Kylie Wilcox and Yufei Long each upset top-10 nationally ranked opponents in singles to break the school record twice, but second-ranked North Carolina outlasted Boston College 5-2 in ACC play on Friday afternoon at the Flynn Recreation Complex.

In singles play, Wilcox and Long were each dominant in their opening sets before losing the second set. Wilcox beat No. 6 Sara Daavettila 6-2 in the third set to clinch her No. 2 singles match, defeating the highest ranked opponent in school history. Just minutes later in first singles, Long shut down No. 2 Makenna Jones 6-0 in the decisive set to break Wilcox's record.

Long's victory cut the Tar Heels' overall lead to 3-2, but UNC won the remaining singles matchups in straight sets as Alle Sanford clinched the match by beating rookie Laura Lopez 6-3, 6-2.
The Tar Heels (12-1, 1-0 ACC) edged the Eagles (9-2, 1-2 ACC) for the doubles point as Long and Jackie Urbinati fell 6-3 to Jessie Aney and Alexa Graham. Wilcox and Natasha Irani had previously evened the doubles at 1-1 following a 6-4 victory over Daavettila and Sanford.

Boston College hosts another ranked opponent on Sunday (Feb. 24) when No. 23 NC State visits the Heights at 11 a.m.
