November 08, 2019 | Field Hockey
NEWTON, Mass. – Fusine Govaert scored her second game-winning goal in three games, to help the No. 9 Boston College field hockey team advance to its first ACC Championship game in program history, defeating No. 4 Virginia, 1-0.
Â
Sarah Dwyer played 64:29 in net, making six saves in her shutout effort.
Â
The game got off to a slow start, before Virginia earned a penalty corner at the 21:18 mark in the game. Virginia took a shot off the corner, which was saved by Dwyer, before a Virginia rebound that Govaert kept out of the back of the net with a defensive save.
Â
Then five minutes later, Dwyer stepped up again, making back-to-back saves in front of the net to keep the score level.
Â
BC got its first big opportunity of the game at the 39:43 mark, but Govaert had two shots blocked on back-to-back penalty corners. The game would be level heading into overtime.
Â
After some back-and-forth action, Govaert picked up the ball inside the circle and carried it to her left where she hit a reverse shot that hit the top of the netting and sent the Eagles to the ACC Championship.
