No. 9 Duke Tops Boston College, 3-2, With Strong Second Half
September 21, 2018 | Men's Soccer
Teams combined for five second-half goals in 30 minutes
DURHAM, N.C. – The Boston College men's soccer team scored twice in the final 30 minutes of play, but the Eagles couldn't finish off the comeback, falling at No. 9 Duke in ACC action on Friday night, 3-2. Heidar Aegisson's first goal of the season in the 87th minute made it a one-goal game and the Eagles kept pushing for an equalizer but it never came.
The ACC contest was scoreless for the first 57 minutes of play before the teams combined for the game's five goals, including three in an eight-minute span.
Despite earning three corner kicks in the first 20 minutes – and five total in the first half – Duke couldn't capitalize in the early going, with Antonio Chavez Borrelli saving the lone corner the hosts produced a chance off of. The teams entered the break scoreless despite trading post shots – by Tyshawn Rose and Issa Rayyan – and Simon Enstrom's doorstep bid off a bouncing ball in the box, with Will Pulisic making the point blank save.
Chavez Borrelli kept it a one-goal game in the 63rd minute when Rayyan broke through and tried to go low but the sophomore made a kick save to direct the rebound the other way.
The teams then fired off five goals in the span of 30 minutes. Duke took a 1-0 only to have Beto Luna answer, but the Blue Devils went on to take a 3-1 lead, with Rayyan's 77th minute score serving as the game-winner despite Aegisson's late tally.
Both Chavez Borrelli and Pulisic finished with four saves, while Duke (4-2-0, 1-1-0 ACC) landed seven shots on goal to six for Boston College (2-2-3, 1-2-0 ACC)
Boston College returns to action on Friday, Sept. 28, when the team travels to Notre Dame to take on the Fighting Irish in another ACC matchup.
