
Boston College Opens Season With a 55-21 Win Over Massachusetts

Anthony Brown throws for career-high four touchdowns in the win
BC totaled 455 yards of total offense on 55 plays in the first half, accounting for six touchdowns (four passing, two rushing) through the first 30 minutes of play.
The Eagles scored on their opening drive, as Dillon helped account for 52 of the 80 yards on the drive. Â The preseason All-American running back gained 37 yards on four carries and hauled in his first collegiate pass - a 15-yard strike from Brown - for the score.
UMass tied it midway through the first quarter, moving 72 yards on four plays, making it 7-7 with 6:29 to go.
The Eagles then scored 41 unanswered points to take a 48-7 halftime lead at the break. Â During that run, BC got two receiving TD's from Kobay White, two rushing scores from Davon Jones, and a 33-yard TD catch from Ray Marten before a 59-yard pick-six by safety Lukas Denis ended the half.
After a scoreless third quarter, freshman RB David Bailey scored his first career touchdown from eight yards out with 13:36 to play in fourth quarter. Â
UMass found the end zone twice in the fourth quarter as Jordan Fredericks hauled in a TD pass with 6:05 to play and Michael Curtis ran it in from two yards out with 1:27 to go.

HOW IT HAPPENED
- Anthony Brown was 15-for-21 for 279 yards and four touchdowns in the first half.
- Kobay White hauled in two TD receptions from Brown - a 34-yard pass with 3:45 left in the first and a 27-yard strike late in the second quarter.
- Davon Jones found the endzone twice on short-yardage runs, breaking through the Minutemen D-Line for a pair of scores to start the second quarter.
- Ray Marten scored his second career touchdown on a 33-yard strike from Brown with 4:30 left in the second quarter.
- Lukas Denis returned a pass from UMass' Andrew Ford 59 yards for a pick-six score to close out the second half.
- David Bailey's rushing score at the 13:36 mark of the fourth quarter extended the lead to 55-7.
NOTABLES
- BC amassed 455 yards on 55 total plays through the first half. Â In total, the Eagles gained 622 yards - the most in the Steve Addazio era.
- It was BC's first game with 600+ yards since gaining 648 vs. Temple on Oct. 11, 2003. Â
- Boston College was 6-for-11 in third down conversions and 4-for-4 in red zone scoring chances (three rush; one passing).
- Brown set new career-highs in yardage (279) and passing TD's (four). Â Both previous career-bests came last season in a 41-10 win at Virginia.
- Dillon's first career catch resulted in a touchdown. Â Since 2008, six BC players crossed the goal line on their first respective receptions. Â The last player to do so was QB Anthony Brown last season vs. Virginia Tech.
- Over his last eight games, Dillon has rushed for 1,354 yards. Â He finished the afternoon with 125 all-purpose yards (98 rushing; 27 receiving).
- White finished with three catches for 89 yards. Â It was the first two-TD game of his career.
- Marten made three catches for 69 yards and a touchdown - a career-best 33 yard scoring haul for the redshirt junior tight end.
- Jeff Smith made three catches for 39 yards plus four carries for 35 yards; totaling 74 all-purpose yards.
- Denis' 59-yard interception return for TD in the second quarter was the preseason All-American's first career pick-six.
- It was the first INT return for a touchdown by a Boston College player since Nov. 18, 2017 (Taj Amir-Torres, 65 yards, vs. Connecticut).
- EJ Perry took over under center for the Eagles in the third quarter. Â He was 3-for-4 for 30 yards. Matt McDonald saw action in the fourth quarter, going 2-for-2 for 11 yards.
- Defensively, Connor Strachan led the Eagles with eight tackles (two solo; one sack).
- Ray Smith made six tackles (four solo) and collected his first career interception.
- The BC defense registered six sacks and eight tackles for a loss while breaking up six passes on the afternoon.
- The win was the 10th straight over Massachusetts and improved the all-time series record to 22-5 vs. the Minutemen. BC is now 13-3 at home vs. UMass.
