Fintan Devlin scored the 88th minute equalizer
NEWTON, Mass. – The Boston College men's soccer team finally got its 2018 season unofficially underway on Wednesday afternoon when it hosted the University of Massachusetts Minutemen in a preseason scrimmage at the Newton Campus Fields. The two squads played to a 2-2 draw, with both of the Eagles' goals coming in the second half.
It was the first of two preseason exhibition matches for BC, with the second coming up on Saturday afternoon against Colgate.
The Rundown
The Minutemen opened the scoring early on, but the Eagles settled in for the remainder of the first half…the Eagles scored early in the second half before UMass regained the lead…not to be denied, BC equalized on an 88th minute corner kick.
The Scoring
Trevor Davock created a goal for the Eagles early in the second half, driving in towards the right post before slotting a ball across the goal mouth that deflected past the keeper…Fintan Devlin tied the game up with about two minutes to play, running to the left post for a finish on a corner kick by Lasse Lehmann…both of the UMass goals came during the run of play...the visitors almost had a third but the Eagles backline drew them into an offsides whistle.
Holding Strong
Around the 15th minute, UMass had two free kicks from about 60 yards out and both times tried to send it over the top but the backline held strong…Joshua Forbes was pressured going back towards his own goal but a pass back to the keeper got out of trouble…Callum Johnson made a nice defensive play on a UMass corner, tracking down the opposing player and forcing him out for a BC throw-in.
Chances
Johnson had BC's best chance of the first half - firing a rocket off a rebound from inside the 18-yard line – but the ball was deflected on its way to goal…Forbes also fed Roni Diniz down the right flank for a ball he was going to win before a sliding defensive play by the UMass defender to break up the chance…that ball from Forbes to Diniz proved fruitful nonetheless, though, as the Eagles had back-to-back corners that stayed in the attacking third…it was Forbes' header that deflected out for another corner...rookie Alex Mieles had a nice look in the 76th minute but sent the shot from 20 yards out just wide.
