Dempsey Drives in Winning Run to Lift BC on Senior Day

Rapp strikes out five over seven-inning start
BRIGHTON, Mass. – The Boston College baseball team collected a 2-1 victory over Louisville on Sunday afternoon at Harrington Athletics Village on Senior Day, closing out the regular-season Atlantic Coast Conference home slate with a win.
Sophomore Brian Dempsey led the Eagles (16-30, 7-20 ACC) with a 3-for-4 day and drove in the game-winning run in the eighth to break a one-all tie game. Freshman Chris Galland was 2-for-3 and extended his on-base streak to a team-long 21 games.
Junior RHP Thomas Lane picked up his second win of the season, throwing the final two innings without allowing a hit or run. Senior Brian Rapp went seven innings in his last career start at home. He allowed just four hits, one run, walked four and struck out five. His 178 career Ks ranks 10th on BC's all-time list.
BC has topped the Cardinals (32-15, 12-12 ACC) three of the six times on The Heights.

- Sophomore Brian Dempsey led the Eagles with a 3-for-4 day and drove in the game-winning run with an RBI single in the eighth. He has reached base in 40 of the Eagles 46 games this season.
- Senior Jake Palomaki was 1-for-4 on the day. He stole his 17th base of the season, tying for 10th on BC's single-season record list. His 58 career stolen bases are second all-time and he has reached base in 42 of the Eagles' 46 games this season, including the last 12.
- Junior RHP Thomas Lane earned his second win of the season with two innings of scoreless relief. He did not give up a hit and allowed just two walks.
- Senior RHP Brian Rapp allowed just one run in his seven-inning start. He gave up four hits and four walks and struck out five. His 178 career strikeouts are 10th on BC's all-time list and his .193 opponent batting average in 2018 is currently first in single-season record books.
- Freshman Chris Galland was 2-for-3 with a walk to extend his on-base streak to 21 games, the longest of the season for BC.
- Sophomore Jack Cunningham crossed the plate as the game-winning run in the eighth. He recorded the other BC RBI and drew a walk in the game.
KEY PLAYS
- With the game knotted at one, the Eagles had runners on the corners on third with two outs. Dempsey singled to center to plate the go-ahead run.
- Lane allowed a two-out walk in the ninth but junior catcher Gian Martellini caught the base runner attempting to steal to end the game.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- The Eagles were the first to strike, scoring a run in the third. Sophomore Dante Baldelli led off with a walk and with one down, Galland doubled down the third-base line to put runners on second and third. Cunningham plated Baldelli with a groundout to second.
- The Cardinals evened the score in the fifth. A walk and bunt single put runners on first and second with one out. A balk call moved both into scoring position and Devin Mann grounded out to short to bring in the tying run. A walk and another balk call gave UL runners on second and third again, but Rapp got out the inning with his fifth strikeout.
- With RHP Bryan Hoeing on the mound in the eighth, Galland started the inning with a single and Cunningham followed with a bunt for a hit. Galland was thrown out trying to take third on a close play but Martellini singled to left to put runners on first and second. Redshirt junior Scott Braren chopped one to second for a fielder's choice. With runners on the corners, Dempsey laced one to center to score Cunningham and give BC the 2-1 lead.
- Lane got the first two outs quickly in the ninth on a fly ball and grounder to short. He allowed a walk and pinch runner Lucas Dunn came in to run at first. Martellini put up the final out gunning down Dunn at second.

- The Eagles evened the series at The Heights, 3-3. Louisville leads the all-times 9-3.
- Before the start of the game, the seven members of the Class of 2018 were honored – Mitch Bigras, Scott Braren, Carmen Giampetruzzi, Anthony Maselli, Jake Palomaki Brian Rapp and Brendan Spagnuolo.
