Eagles Open Play in Brighton With a Win Over UMass

BC broke the consecutive win record that was set in 1995 with its 11 straight victory
BRIGHTON, Mass. – The Boston College softball team defeated UMass, 3-0, in its first game on the new Brighton field and extended its winning streak to 11 straight games, successfully breaking the program record for consecutive games won that was set back in 1995.

BC struck first in the first inning when senior Annie Murphy scored on a pop-up single by freshman Emme Martinez. The Eagles added to their lead in the third inning when Murphy hit a single to center field and freshman CC Cook hit a single and then advanced to second on a throwing error, allowing Murphy to score and giving BC a 3-0 lead.

Redshirt junior Allyson Frei threw seven scoreless innings, holding the Minutemen to only three hits, while also recording five strikeouts.

The Eagles will play again tomorrow, April 11, when they host Connecticut at the Brighton Athletic Village at 4 p.m.

BC opened the scoring early in the first inning as Sharabba led off with a walk and Murphy reached on an error. Both runners attempted to steal and Sharabba was caught stealing at third, but Murphy reached second safely. Cook reached on a walk, both base runners advanced on a passed ball. Martinez hit a pop single to drive home Murphy and give BC a lead that it would hold for the remainder of the game. Frei held the Minutemen to just three hits over seven innings to secure the victory for BC.

- Â The 11 game win streak breaks the program record for the most consecutive games won that was set back in 1995. The longest consecutive win record until today was 10 games against St. Johns, Fairfield, Brown, Villanova and Seton Hall.
- During the winning streak, BC has recorded a .307 team batting average and scored 80 runs. The team has collected 86 hits, including six home runs. BC has also drawn 60 walks during the streak, posting a .441 team on base percentage. Senior Jessica Dreswick and Frei have a combined 1.65 ERA during the streak and have allowed just 17 earned runs.
- The BC pitching staff has now thrown a combined nine shutouts this season, four of which have come in the last 11 contests.
- Frei threw her seventh complete game of the season today and her fourth shutout. She now has 32 career complete games and 10 career shutouts. She now holds ninth place in the BC record books in complete games and third place in shutouts. She allowed only three hits on the day, including holding the nation's leader in batting average, Jena Cozza, to just one hit. She walked three and struck out five on the day.
- With a single in the third inning, senior Annie Murphy extended her hitting streak to seven games.
- With a walk in the first inning, senior Chloe Sharabba has reached base safely in all but four games this season. She drew her team-leading 23rd walk of the season in the first inning.
- The first pitch ever thrown at the new field was by Frei it was a ball.
- Jena Cozza picked up the first hit at the new field with an infield single to third in the first inning.
- Murphy scored the first ever run in the first inning.

With a double steal on, Sharabba was caught stealing at third and Murphy was safe at second. Cook reached on walk and both base runners advanced on a passed ball. Martinez hit a pop up single over the head of the second baseman, allowing Murphy to score on the play and putting the Eagles up 1-0.
- Murphy singled to center field to lead off the third inning and promptly advanced to second on a wild pitch. Cook hit a single and advanced to second on a throwing error by the third baseman. She moved all the way to third on the throw as Murphy scored on the play. Martinez grounded out to second base, driving home Cook and putting the Eagles up 3-0.
- UMass posed its biggest threat of the game in the sixth inning when, with two outs, Madison Gimpl reached on a walk and Amy Smith singled to right field to put runners on first and second for the Minutemen. Frei forced a popup to Sharabba though to end the inning and keep UMass scoreless.
