
Eagles Fall to Duke, 4-3, to Open Conference Play

DURHAM N.C. – The Boston College softball team dropped its first conference game of the year to Duke, 4-3, on Friday evening.

Duke loaded the bases in the first inning and jumped out to an early 2-0 lead behind a single apiece from Jameson Kavel and Jill Ferraro. BC added a run in the second when freshman CC Cook hit a double to right field to drive home junior Carly Severini. The Blue Devils tacked on a run in the bottom of inning as a single by Raine Wilson scored a run to increase Duke's lead to 3-1.

The Eagles tied the score in the fifth inning though when senior Annie Murphy picked up a two-out single to drive home two runs for BC and tie it up at 3-3. Duke put the winning run on base in the seventh inning though when Katherine Huey reached on a walk. She advanced to third on a double and scored on a passed ball to secure a 4-3 victory for the Blue Devils.

The Eagles look for their first conference win when they take on Duke tomorrow at 1 p.m.

- Murphy collected her 21st hit of the season, which is second on the team. The senior has tallied six total RBIs this season and now has two multiple RBI games. Murphy also now has recorded six multiple-hit games during the 2018 campaign.

How it Happened:
- Duke opened the scoring in the first inning when Kavel singled through the right side, Abboud reached on a fielding error and Raine Wilson drew a walk to load the bases. Ferraro hit a single through the right side to advance every runner and score Kavel. Butler grounded out to second base to score Abboud and give the Blue Devils a 2-0 lead.
- Severini drew a walk to lead off the second inning. Cook blasted a double to right field to score Severini and cut Duke's lead in half.
- The Blue Devils added one run in the bottom of the inning as Reilly Metzger reached on a walk and advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt. A single by Kavel moved Metzger to third. Wilson picked up a single to center field to score Metzger and make it 3-1.
- In the top of the fifth inning, sophomore Olivia Markopoulos reached base on a fielder's choice and junior Lexi DiEmmanuele beat out a throw to first to put two runners on base with two outs. Senior Chloe Sharabba followed by reaching base on a fielder's choice to load the bases. Murphy picked up a single to left field to score Markopoulos and DiEmmanuele and tie it up at 3-3.
- In the bottom of the seventh inning, Huey drew a walk and Peyton St. George hit a double to right center field to put runners on second and third with one out. Moreno, who pinch ran for Huey, scored on a passed ball to secure a 4-3 win for the Blue Devils.
BC returns to action when it plays the second game of the series against Duke tomorrow, March 17 at 1 p.m. in Durham, N.C.
