Mattila Hat Trick and Woll Shutout Lift BC Over UConn 4-0
December 06, 2018 | Men's Hockey
HARTFORD, Conn. – Julius Mattila recorded his first career hat trick and Joseph Woll posted his second straight shutout in a convincing 4-0 Hockey East win for Boston College over UConn on Thursday night at the XL Center.
Mattila added an assist for a four-point night, while David Cotton (two assists) and Logan Hutsko (goal) helped the Eagles' top line combine for seven points. Senior defensemen Casey Fitzgerald and Michael Kim collected three assists between the two tri-captains.
Woll stopped all 30 UConn shots he faced, pushing his shutout streak to 117:37 dating back to the first period of the win over Boston University last Friday. He made double-digit saves in the first and third period, but his two most important efforts came in the second.
Six minutes into the middle frame, Woll kept the Eagles in front with a sprawling glove save on Carter Trumbull at the right doorstep. Three minutes later, the junior slid post to post to rob Jachym Kondelik on a wraparound bid with his right pad.
BC converted on both of its power plays and was 2-for-2 on the kill along with its first shorthanded goal of the year to cap Mattila's hat trick, the Eagles' second this season after Cotton's at Wisconsin on Oct. 13.
Boston College (5-6-2) improved to 5-1-2 in Hockey East and 5-1-2 overall in its last eight games. UConn dropped its sixth straight and fell to 5-10-1 (2-8-1 HEA).
