Watts Nets 50th Career Goal in Loss at Providence
November 03, 2018 | Women's Hockey
BC drops its first conference game of the season, 4-2.
PROVIDENCE, R.I. – Providence College scored twice in the second and third periods and fended off a furious Eagles' rally to claim a 4-2 win over the No. 5/5 Boston College women's hockey team on Saturday afternoon at Schneider Arena. The loss snapped BC's nation-leading 8-game unbeaten streak. Daryl Watts scored twice for the Eagles in the game to reach 50 career goals.
After an even first period that saw both teams fire 11 shots on goal and go 0-for-1 on the power play, BC began the middle frame killing off 47 seconds of a 5-on-3. The Friars were able to capitalize on that advantage, taking just 18 seconds to open the scoring. Six minutes later, the teams combined for two goals in just over a minute. Just 1:04 after Daryl Watts evened the game with her seventh of the season, Providence once again capitalized on the power play to take back a one-goal lead.
Four minutes into the third period, the Friars took a two-goal lead on Maureen Murphy's second of the game. Though the Eagles failed to find the net on their first two power plays of the third period, Watts made sure they converted on the third. The sophomore's 50th career goal cut the deficit to one with 10:09 to play.
The Eagles kept pushing for the equalizer but it wouldn't come and Christina Putigna scored on an empty net with nine seconds to play.
Maddy McArthur finished with 24 saves while Madison Myers had 22 for Providence. The Friars held the final edge in shots on goal at 28-24. Both BC (1-for-3) and Providence (2-for-4) converted on the power play.
