CHESTNUT HILL, Mass. -- No. 2 Clemson used two second half touchdowns to pull away from No. 17 Boston College for a 27-7 victory on Saturday night at a sold out Alumni Stadium.
The Tigers (10-0, 7-0 ACC) got on the board on the first drive of the game, booting a 30-yard field goal less than three minutes in. The Eagles' (7-3, 4-2) defense put the clamps on Clemson in the red zone.
BC's first offensive series of the game ended in a punt, but not before quarterback Anthony Brown was shaken up. Â He would not return and EJ Perry assumed the signal caller duties for Boston College.
The Eagles posted another strong defensive series - including putting pressure on Clemson QB Trevor Lawrence - forcing a Tigers punt to Michael Walker. Â And Walker returned it 74 yards to the house - his first career punt return for a touchdown - and the Eagles took a 7-3 lead with 6:22 left in the first.
The Tigers made it 10-7 on its next series, carving close to five minutes off the clock in a nine-play, 70-yard drive, capped by a two-yard TD pass from Lawrence to Milan Richard on fourth-and-goal with 1:28 to go in the quarter.
After a three-and-out for BC, Clemson tacked on another field goal - this time from 23 yards out - extending its lead to 13-7 with 11:45 remaining in the second quarter. Â It would remain 13-7 into the half, as the Eagles defensive corps and special teams came up with key plays at opportune times.
The Eagles got the ball to start the second half, but went three-and-out. Â Clemson responded with a quick scoring strike, covering 64 yards on three plays as Lawrence found the end zone on a six-yard keeper, making it 20-7 with 11:56 left in the third.
Clemson's Amari Rodgers made it 27-7, returning a BC punt 58 yards for the touchdown with 11:39 to play in the game, which proved to be the final score of the night.
