Sam Coffey Tallies First Career Hat Trick

BC defeats Virginia Tech, 3-0, to take sole possession of second place in the ACC.
NEWTON, Mass. – Â
Sophomore Sam Coffey scored three goals to lead Boston College past ACC foe Virginia Tech, 3-0, on Thursday night at the Newton Soccer Field.

Prior to the match, BC, Virginia Tech and Louisville were all tied in second place in the ACC with a 3-1-0 conference record. With the win, Boston College (12-1-0) stands alone in second place with a 4-1-0 record as Louisville fell to Virginia. The Hokies dropped to 7-3-2 overall and 3-2-0 in the ACC.

Coffey opened the scoring in the 11th minute of the match on a left-footed shot to the far post from 18-yards out. Fellow sophomore Jillian Jennings was credited with the assist on the goal.

The Eagles went up 2-0 in the first half when junior Jenna Bike was held and earned a free kick right outside the box to the right of the Virginia Tech goalkeeper Mandy McGlynn. Coffey stepped up and bent the ball over the wall, into the near post from 24-yards out for her second goal of the night.

Coffey's final goal came in the 68th minute when she won a 50-50 ball 30-yards out. She took the ball down to her left foot and ripped a shot to the near post for her first career hat trick.

The Eagles defense held the Hokies to just one shot on goal. The defense gave up only six shots and three corner kicks. BC's offense had nine shots, four on goal.

Coffey has recorded a point in 10 of BC's 13 games this season. Prior to the game, Coffey led the ACC in points and assists. She now has a single-season career-high of 27 total points (8 goals, 11 assists).
- Â Sophomore Jillian Jennings picked up her fourth assist of the season on Sam Coffey's first goal.
- Alexis Bryant is now 12-1-0 this season and picked up her single-season career-high seventh shutout. She now has 20 career shutouts.
