October 28, 2018 | Women's Soccer
At 14-4-1, Eagles await NCAA berth.
CHESTNUT HILL, Mass. – The No. 19 Boston College women's soccer team fell to Clemson, 1-0, in the quarterfinal of the ACC Tournament on Sunday at the Newton Soccer Field. BC, the fourth seed, is now 14-4-1, while Clemson, the fifth seed, improved to 12-7. The Tigers will play North Carolina on Friday night at 5:30 in the ACC semifinal game at WakeMed Soccer Park in Cary, N.C.
Boston College had its chances as the Eagles outshot Clemson, 19-6, in the match.
Clemson took four shots in the first half, and Mariana Speckmaier scored on the fourth attempt in the 19th minute. Brooke Power received the ball from Sam Staab on the end line. She sent a ball into the box and Speckmaier headed the ball into the back of the net.
BC tried to tally the equalizer in the 42nd minute when sophomore Jillian Jennings headed a ball from Sam Coffey off a set piece to the far corner. Clemson keeper Sandy MacIver (five saves) reached out and made the save to keep the Tigers up, 1-0.
In the second half, Boston College kept MacIver busy as they had 14 second half shots, four in the first 10 minutes of action. A flurry of shots came from the Eagles offense in the final 10 minutes of the game. BC had two corner kicks with the only shot was a threat. A header from Kayla Duran was easily cleared by the Tigers.
The best threat in the final minutes came of a corner from Sam Coffey. Jenna Bike headed the ball and McIver dove. It looked as though McIver was in the goal on the save but a review of the video did not overrule the call on the field and the game remained 1-0 Clemson.
