Eagles fall as Carolina scores in the final 10 minutes.
NEWTON, Mass. – The Boston College men's soccer team lost to No. 5 North Carolina, 2-0, on Friday night in a tight ACC match in front of 572 fans at the Newton Soccer Field.
Boston College dropped to 2-5-0 in the ACC and 4-6-3 overall, while the Tar Heels improved to 5-1 in the conference and 11-2-1 overall.
The Eagles came out with energy, matching the Tar Heels speed and physical play. In the first 10 minutes of the match, both teams had two shots. The most dangerous came off the foot of BC's Kristofer Konradsson, as his shot sailed just high over the cross bar.
BC ended the first half with an offensive push. Senior Simon Enstrom set up Lesse Lehmann from 18 yards out. The junior midfielder shot just went wide of the goal. Konradsson followed as he registered a shot with just over a minute to play.
The half ended at 0-0, as BC tallied five shots to three for the Tar Heels. Neither team registered a shot on goal.
Boston College opened the half aggressive as Konradsson cracked a shot from outside the box. It was the first shot on goal for both teams but the UNC goalkeeper James Pyle calmly made the save.
UNC's attack started to pressure the Eagles back line. In the 70th minute, Jeremy Kelly's shot was blocked, only to have the deflection land on the foot of Mauricio Pineda. The junior midfielder's shot was blocked again and the BC defense caught the Tar Heels offside to keep the game knotted at 0-0.
The Tar Heels offense finally broke free in the 80th minute as Nils Bruening headed in a long deep ball from Jack Skahan to the far post for a 1-0 lead. Five minutes later, Skahan held the back line and ran onto a through ball to break in alone on the Eagles keeper for a 2-0 lead.
