Rhode Island Holds Off Eagles in Non-Conference Clash
October 23, 2018 | Men's Soccer
Simon Enstrom scored his ninth goal of the season.
KINGSTON, R.I. – The Boston College men's soccer team fell on the road, 2-1, to the University of Rhode Island on Tuesday night at the URI Soccer Complex. Senior Simon Enstrom scored his ninth goal of the season to tie the game in the second half, but the Rams scored the game-winner in the 80th minute and held off a pesky Eagles attack over the final 10 minutes.
Â
The game, which was delayed due to lightning for nearly an hour in the second half, saw all three goals come in the final 30 minutes of play.
Â
The opening 45 minutes saw the times attempt just three shots total, with the Eagles holding a 2-1 edge thanks to a 22nd-minute header by Ronaldinho Diniz and an attempt from Jesus Sahagan 10 minutes later.Â
Â
Rhode Island, which is receiving votes in the latest United Soccer Coaches' poll, found the game's first goal, though, less than 10 minutes into the second half to take a 1-0 lead.
BC immediately tried to answer back, with Trevor Davock having a shot blocked to earn a corner less than a minute after the restart. That set the tone and BC equalized less than four minutes after the URI goal on Enstrom's ninth of the season.
A 50-minute lightning delay came at the 73rd minute. Christian Garner, making his first career start and appearance, made his first career save right out of the delay to keep the game tied. Despite firing the next three shot attempts, the Eagles would see the Rams score the go-ahead goal in the 80th minute. BC fired away in the final five minutes, putting two shots on goal and earning two corner kicks, but couldn't net the equalizer.
Â
Garner finished with two saves while Roger Penske had three for Rhode Island. BC outshot URI, 14-6, while shot on target were equal at four apiece. The Eagles also had the lead in corners at 7-4.
Â
Boston College will close out regular season play on Friday, Oct. 26, traveling to face No. 20 Syracuse. The ACC clash is set to kickoff at 7 p.m.
