Eagles wrap-up Hockey East season series with Huskies before first-round Beanpot meeting on Feb. 6
CHESTNUT HILL, Mass. – The second-ranked Boston College women's hockey team will face Northeastern in a home-and-home series this weekend, wrapping up the teams' three-game Hockey East season series.
Â
BC hosts the weekend opener on Friday, Jan. 12. The 2 p.m. faceoff at Kelley Rink will be streamed live on ESPN3, which is available at WatchESPN.com or via the ESPN app. Saturday, Jan. 13, the series moves down Huntington Ave., to Matthews Arena. A new, earlier 12 p.m. puck drop was announced on Wednesday, and that game will be both streamed live on gonu.com and televised live on NESNPlus.
Â
Boston College (18-1-3, 12-0-3 HEA) enters the game riding the nation's longest undefeated streak – 12 games – and has a six-point lead in the Hockey East standings, although second-place Providence (21 pts.) has two games in hand.
Â
Northeastern (11-9-2, 7-6-1) will play its second and third games of the week when the teams meet this weekend, after claiming a 4-2 win over UConn on Tuesday night at Matthews Arena.
Â
The teams have met once already this season as the Eagles claimed a 7-3 win at Kelley Rink on Nov. 28 in a midweek meeting. Caitrin Lonergan helped power BC to the win, posting five points (hat trick, two assists) in the victory. After the weekend, the teams will meet at least once more this year as they're scheduled to meet in the first round of the 40th Annual Beanpot on Tuesday, Feb. 6, at BC's Kelley Rink
Â
Husky senior McKenna Brand continues to lead NU in scoring, posting a team-best 21 points in 22 games, including a team-high 12 goals. Denisa Krizova (18 points) and Kasidy Anderson (16 points) follow behind Brand in the scoring leaders.
Â
Northeastern has used two goaltenders this year, most recently going back to junior Brittany Bugalski. Bugalski entered in the second period against the Eagles and has started two of Northeastern's three games since: the 2-1 overtime loss at New Hampshire on Dec. 1 and Tuesday's win over Connecticut. Freshman Aerin Frankel started against the Eagles on Nov. 28, allowing four goals in 34:30 before Bugalski entered. She last started the Huskies home 5-3 win over UNH on Dec. 3. Overall, Frankel's 4-3-1 record is backed by a .940 save percentage and a 1.93 GAA. Bugalski has a 2.64 overall GAA and a .904 save percentage with a 7-6-0 overall record.
Â
For the Eagles, the trio of Daryl Watts (59 points), Caitrin Lonergan (53 points) and Makenna Newkirk (38 points) continue to pace the offense, while Toni Ann Miano (23 points) is the nation's leading scorer among Division I defensemen. Watts and Lonergan rank Nos. 1 and 2 nationally in almost every offensive category, while Newkirk is third nationally in assists and fifth in points.
Â
In goal, Katie Burt has started all 22 games, posting an 18-1-3 record with a 2.03 GAA and a .928 save percentage. She is now five wins back of tying the NCAA career victories record (114 wins).
Â
Following the weekend series, Boston College will return to the ice on Tuesday, Jan. 16, when the Eagles host Harvard in their first non-conference game since late November. Faceoff is set for 7 p.m. at Kelley Rink, and the game will be streamed live on ESPN3.
