Luna's First Goal Not Enough Against No. 6 Irish
September 08, 2017 | Men's Soccer
Luna scores his first career goal, but it isn’t enough to overcome a hat trick from Notre Dame's captain
NEWTON, Mass. – Sixth-ranked Notre Dame used captain Jon Gallagher's hat trick to defeat the Boston College men's soccer team, 3-1, on Friday night at the Newton Campus Soccer Field. Tonight's game was the teams' 2017 ACC opener.
After a scoreless first half, Gallagher got Notre Dame (4-0, 1-0 ACC) on the board with a sizzling free kick from 24 yards out in the 50th minute. He added his second when he headed home a cross in the 74th minute, and rounded out his hat trick with a replica of his first goal – another free kick from 20 yards – in the 83rd minute.
Boston College (2-3, 0-1-0 ACC) pulled within one goal in the 82nd minute when Beto Luna converted for his first career tally. However, Notre Dame responded with Gallagher's third one minute later to snuff out the Eagles' comeback effort.
BC freshman goalkeeper Antonio Chavez Borrelli had a career-high six saves in the loss, while Notre Dame's Chris Hubbard made one save in the win.
Boston College returns to action on Friday, Sept. 15, when the team travels to No. 3 Clemson. The teams will kick off at 7 p.m., and the game will be televised live on the ACC Regional Sports Network – NESNPlus locally – and streamed live on ACC Network Extra outside TV coverage areas.

HOW IT HAPPENED
- 30' | After the Eagles were shown a yellow card and the Irish were awarded a free kick from 35 yards out, the Eagles committed a foul a yard off the area while defending the initial free kick. The referee awarded another free kick one yard off the edge of the penalty area. Notre Dame's Jon Gallagher stepped up, curling his shot around the wall toward the left upper corner. BC goalie Antonio Chavez Borrelli made a leaping save and pushed the ball out of harm, preserving the 0-0 score line that held through the half.
- 50' | ND GOAL - Another BC yellow card just outside the area and Notre Dame was awarded a free kick six yards off the penalty area. Gallagher again stepped up and laced a shot around the wall and into the upper right corner of the goal for an unassisted tally.
- 74' | ND GOAL - The Irish worked the counter attack for their second goal of the game. Gallagher got in behind the Eagles' defense and as the BC back line retreated, the Irish pushed the ball out wide right to Kyle Dedrick. He sent in a lofted cross that found Gallagher at the back post where he rose to head it in.
- 82' | BC GOAL - The Eagles got on the scoreboard after working the ball down the right side. Callum Johnson played the ball ahead to Younes Boudadi, who was making an overlapping run into the corner. Boudadi has space and sent a looping cross back across the field to the far post where Lasse Lehmann headed it into the heart of the six-yard box. Beto Luna snuck behind a defender and met the ball on the line, heading it home for the BC goal.
- 83' | ND GOAL - After an Eagles defender committed a foul on the edge of the area, Gallagher stepped up for another free kick opportunity. Replicating his first goal, he looped his shot around the wall and into the upper right corner past an outstretched Chavez Borrelli.
