Volleyball travels to Philadelphia to compete in the Cherry & White Challenge
CHESTNUT HILL, Mass. – Boston College volleyball hits the road for the first time during the 2017 campaign. They will travel to Philadelphia to participate in the Cherry & White Challenge hosted by Temple University. The Eagles will first battle host Temple Friday at 7p.m. and will challenge Delaware the following day at 11 a.m.
BC hosted two tournaments to open the season, slating a 2-4 record with victories over Alabama at Birmingham and Bryant. Over the course of the two weekends, the Eagles racked up 307 kills, led by sophomore Cat Balido with 81 kills, and earned 385 points over 25 sets. Sophomore Jill Strockis showed up defensively, recording 95 digs.
Head coach Chris Campbell saw many positives after coming off two action-packed home weekends, but highlighted the goals for the team as they hit the road.
"It's our first road weekend of the season, so part of it is getting used to the new format and someone else's gym," said Campbell. "The bigger picture is that we need to continue the process that we're on. Last week we were really focused on the execution of free balls and down balls and recognizing the difference in how we go about executing those. We did a lot better on the weekend. This week is a bit more about our block and transition and how we'll reattack out of transition. The goal is to see improvement in that area in the game during both of our matches Friday and Saturday."
Temple sits at an overall 3-3, registering two wins and two losses at a neutral site. They picked up wins over St. John's, Albany and BC's local foe, Northeastern. The Owls have yet to participate in a home match, but that will change this weekend. Redshirt freshman Dana Westfield leads the Owls with 53 points off of 49 kills.
Delaware enters into the Cherry & White Challenge at 0-6. They have yet to compete at home their first contest slated for Sept. 29 versus Northeastern. The Blue Hens are currently paced by sophomore Maria Bellinger's 86 points, 76 kills and 38 digs.
Coach Campbell believes this weekend's matchups will pose an interesting challenge for BC.
"Both are successful programs," said Campbell. "These are good matches for us as we get closer to ACC play in two weeks. Both of those teams are sort of bubble teams for NCAA tournament play, so we're really happy to have them on the schedule. They will be increasingly more difficult challenges than what we saw the past two weekends."
The match against Temple will be streamed live here.
