Eagles look to get first points in conference action as the Hokies come to town on Friday
CHESTNUT HILL, Mass. – The Boston College men's soccer team hosts Virginia Tech in a crucial ACC conference battle on Friday night. Kickoff is set for 5 p.m. at the Newton Campus Fields, and the game will be live on ACC Network Extra, which can be streamed on WatchESPN.com or the ESPN app.
The Eagles have yet to claim points in three games of ACC play, and enter Friday's game sixth in the six-team Atlantic Division still looking for their first league win.
The Hokies come up to Boston sitting fifth in the Coastal Division, with a 1-2-0 league record. However, their one win came at home last Friday against then-No. 1 Notre Dame.
With five games left in the eight-game ACC slate, both teams will be looking for vital points as teams start focusing on the seeding possibilities for the ACC Championship, which starts in less than five weeks.
The last times the teams met it was for the right to advance in the ACC Championship. The teams lined up in the ACC First Round in 2016, with the teams needing penalty kicks to decide the advancing team. After playing to a 2-2 draw through regulation – in which the teams traded goals in the final five minutes of the regulation – BC advanced 4-3 in PKs. Virginia Tech's Rory Slevin kicked his shot off the cross bar after Younes Boudadi converted his effort in the final round to send the Eagles through.
BC comes into Friday's game looking to rebound from Tuesday's 2-1 loss to Rhode Island in a non-conference game in Newton. The Rams posted a 2-0 lead midway through the second half, and after Beto Luna's goal in the 69th minute, the Eagles bombarded the URI defense – en route to a 26-10 shot advantage – but could not find the equalizer.
Following last Friday's win over the Irish, the Hokies topped Longwood, 2-0, at home on Tuesday. This season, all four of VTech's losses have come to teams currently ranked – Omaha, Pacific, Duke and Virginia. The Hokies have wins over then-No. 14 Creighton on the road the top-ranked Irish.
Virginia Tech junior Marcelo Acuna is currently ranked fifth nationally in goals (7), and fifth in shots per game (4.27). For the Eagles, junior Simon Enstrom has five goals on the season, and is ranked ninth nationally in shots per game (4.11) and his five goals are 38th-most nationally.
In goal, both teams feature two of the ACC's busier goalkeepers. BC's Antonio Chavez Borrelli is ranked third in the league in both saves (32) and saves per game (3.56). Virginia Tech's Ben Lundgaard tops both categories, with 49 saves and 5.44 saves per game.
Following Friday's game, the Eagles will get a week's rest before traveling to face Virginia – currently ranked No. 10 – next Friday, Oct. 6.
