Rare Meeting with Friars On Deck Tuesday
September 18, 2017 | Men's Soccer
The Eagles will face a traditional rival for the first time since 2008
CHESTNUT HILL, Mass. – The Boston College men's soccer team will host Providence on Tuesday, Sept. 19, marking the first time the former Big East rivals will meet since 2008.
Â
Tuesday's game at the Newton Campus Fields will now be played at 4:30 p.m. – 90 minutes prior to the originally scheduled 6 p.m. kickoff – because of incoming weather related to Hurricane Jose. Â
Â
The game will still be streamed live on ACC Network Extra, which is available on WatchESPN.com and the ESPN app.
Â
Boston College (2-4-0, 0-2-0 ACC) enters the game looking to snap a four-game losing streak – the team's first four-game losing streak since 2014. Providence (2-3-1, 0-0-1 Big East) is also looking for a win after going 0-1-1 in its last two games.
Â
BC's last two losses have come in league play, including last Friday's 1-0 defeat at No. 10 Clemson. Providence enters after a 0-0 draw against DePaul in Providence on Friday in its Big East opener.
Â
The Friars are paced offensively by redshirt senior Mac Steeves (3 goals, 3 assists), who has factored on six of the team's nine goals this season. Seven different Friars have tallied goals, with six players notching a single strike so far.
Â
In goal, Providence has used three goalkeepers so far, with redshirt junior Colin Miller seeing the most time – 399:50 minutes in four starts – and claiming both of PC's wins this year. Redshirt senior Ben Seguljic and redshirt freshman Tony Billeri have each also started single games.
Â
Regional rivals, Boston College and Providence played annually until 2004, the Eagles' last season in the Big East. Since 1978, BC holds a 16-7-6 edge in the all-time series, including an 11-3-2 mark at home.
Â
Despite the annual meetings for multiple decades, the series all but stalled after BC moved to the ACC for the 2005. The teams met for a home-and-home series in 2007 and 2008 – both 1-0 Providence wins – but have not met since. This is the first meeting in 10 years since that 2008 contest in Providence.
