Enstrom Converts PK in Double Overtime for the Win
September 19, 2017 | Men's Soccer
Eagles snap four-game losing streak, take a 2-1 win over Providence
NEWTON, Mass. – Simon Enstrom converted a penalty kick in double overtime to give the Boston College men's soccer team a 2-1 win over Providence on Tuesday night at the Newton Campus Fields.
Afer a scorless first half, BC's center back Abe Bibas staked the Eagles to a 1-0 lead in the 52nd minute when he headed a shot over Providence goalkeeper Colin Miller after Raphael Salama flicked on Heidar Aegisson's throw-in.
Boston College (3-4-0) withstood mounting pressure from the Friars – who finished the game with a 21-14 edge in shots – as regulation wound down, but Providence (2-4-1) finally broke through in the 85th minute when Mac Steeves slammed home Matt Deperro's short pass in the six-yard box.
Neither team had a solid chance in the first overtime session, but Providence nearly capitalized on an inswinging cross by Braden Kline from the right that nicked off the crossbar at the start of the second session.
After a quick flurry by the Friars in front of Antonio Chavez Borrelli's goal, the Eagles then countered and Younes Boudadi came down the right wing and got a cross off for Enstrom in the area. He rose up with a defender, but came down on his back. However, the Friars' back was whistled for a handball and BC was awarded a penalty. Enstrom claimed the chance and beat Miller to his right to seal the win for the Eagles.
Boston College returns to action on Friday, Sept. 22, when the team travels to face No. 10 Louisville at 7 p.m. at Lynn Stadium. The game will be streamed live on ACC Network Extra, which is available on WatchESPN and the ESPN app.

HOW IT HAPPENED
- First half | The scoreless stanza saw the Eagles assert themselves early and maintain the edge in play for about two-thirds of the half, before Providence's Mac Steeves' hit the first of his two posts of the game in the 33rd minute. PC ended the period out-shooting the Eagles, 9-5.
- 52' | On a second-straight throw in, Heidar Aegisson connected with Raphael Salama on the near post. The Spaniard flicked the ball back where Abe Bibas got onto it and his flicked header rose up over the Providence goalkeeper and in for a 1-0 BC score.
- 57' | Providence nearly equalized through Steeves. While on the far post, he got on the end of a looping cross from the right side and sent a hard shot back across the face of the goal, but it banged off the far post and the BC defense was able to clear.
- 85' | Providence equalized with five minutes left in regulation when Steeves hammered home a short pass by Matt Deperro, who was falling to the ground in front of the goal. After the Friars worked the ball around to the right, they swung it back right, and Danny Griffin charged down the wing toward the end line. His low pass found space between the Eagles defenders, where Deperro was able to slide it over to Steeves for the game-tying goal.
- First OT | Boston College had four corner kicks in the 10-minute stanza, but was unable to convert.
- 100' | As the final seconds of the first OT wound down, Younes Boudadi set up Nikita Bondar alone on the far post after Enstrom made a long run down the right wing. However, Bondar was unable to settle his touch in enough time and shot wide with seconds left in the regulation.
- 102' | Less than two minutes into the second OT, Braden Kline sent an apparent long cross in from the right side, but it curled toward the goal and kissed off the crossbar as Antonio Chavez Borrelli watched it the whole way
- 102' | Providence regained possession after the goal kick and saw a pair of shots in the penalty area blocked, and the Eagles turned the play around and countered.
- 103' | Boudadi got down the right wing and sent the cross in toward Enstrom in the area. Enstrom rose up with a PC defender, but the two got tangled and Enstrom landed on his back. However, the referee immediately whistled for a penalty, citing a Providence handball. Enstrom stepped up and slotted home his attempt to claim the win for the Eagles.
