Eagles return to ACC play looking for first-ever win against the Cardinals
CHESTNUT HILL, Mass. – Fresh off Tuesday's double-overtime victory, the Boston College men's soccer team looks to build on its momentum on Friday night when they travel to face No. 10 Louisville at the Cardinals' Lynn Field.
Â
BC (3-4-0, 0-2-0 ACC) will not only be looking for its first conference win of the year, the Eagles will also be searching for their first-ever win over Louisville (5-1-0, 1-1-0 ACC).
Â
Friday's game will be streamed live on ACC Network Extra, which can be seen on WatchESPN.com and on the ESPN app.
Â
Boston College is 0-2-1 all-time against the Cardinals, with all games played since Louisville joined the ACC in 2014. The first two meetings were one-goal BC losses, but the teams played to a 1-1 tie at the Newton Campus Fields last season. All three meetings have gone to at least one overtime period.
Â
Louisville will be the Eagles' third top-10 opponent in the last four games. The stretch started with then-No. 6 Notre Dame (now No. 1) on Sept. 8, followed by then-No. 10 Clemson (now No. 8) last Friday.
Â
Simon Enstrom's double-OT penalty kick on Tuesday night snapped BC's four-game losing stream, but it was a turn in luck – a handball in the area called in the second extra session – that helped snap the run. Luck was something head coach Ed Kelly felt the Eagles were lacking during the prior four games.
Â
"We've had the short end of the stick (recently), like free kicks and all that kind of stuff," Kelly said. "It's about time that we caught a break."
Â
Enstrom's goal was his fifth of the season in just seven games, pushing him past his entire 2016 total of four in 21 games. Additionally, it lifted him into a tie for ninth place on the Eagles' career goals list – tied with Zeiko Lewis '17 – with 18.
Â
Louisville comes into Friday's game ranked 10th in the country. Tuesday night, the Cards topped IUPUI, 3-0, at home. In their two ACC games so far, they've split at home against then-No. 2 Wake Forest (a 3-1 loss) and on the road at then-No. 7 Syracuse (a 2-1 win). Against other ranked teams so far, the Cards topped then-No. 25 Butler, 1-0, on Aug. 28, and tied then-No. 19 Kentucky, 2-2, at home on Sept. 5. Five of the team's seven games have been played in Louisville.
Â
The Cardinals have out-scored their opponents 12-7 this season, with Tim Kubel and Mohamed Thiaw both with three goals apiece. Adam Wilson has a team-high four assists, while Jake Geinovatch has started all seven games. He has an 0.97 GAA, and has allowed seven goals on 14 shots.
