Four Crews Earn Medals at Knecht Cup

The Eagles left West Windsor, N.J., with three gold medals and a bronze.
WEST WINDSOR, N.J. - Boston College rowing competed in the Knecht Cup from April 8-9 in West Windsor, N.J. The Eagles were one of over 70 teams competing at the Knecht Cup with most of the events filled with 20-30 boats. Entered in six events, BC had a successful weekend, earning three gold medals and one bronze.

"It was a great weekend of racing. All boats learned a lot from competing and we were excited to show great depth in the program. We know we need to work hard to continue our progress, and we are looking forward to racing BU and URI this weekend," head coach Steve Fiske said.

The Varsity Eight won its heat on Saturday to qualify for the semifinals. In the semifinal, BC fell behind early but made a huge push in the last 500 meters to pull ahead of Temple and Wisconsin Lwt, qualifying them for the Grand Final. In the Grand Final, the crew jumped ahead early but could not hold its lead and finished sixth with a time of 6:53.19. Miami won the event and North Carolina finished ninth.Â

Due to weather delays, the Second Varsity Eight heats, semifinals and finals all took place on Sunday. The Eagles won their heat advancing them to semifinals where they also took the top spot. In the Grand Final, a narrow margin separated the top four crews as BC edged Bucknell to claim the bronze medal.

The Varsity Four won their heat on Saturday and finished third in their semifinal which advanced them to the Petite Final. Eager to improve its performance in the semis, the crew raced aggressively and placed seventh overall. North Carolina finished in third ahead of the Eagles and Miami did not advance out of the semifinals.

The Second Varsity Four went undefeated for the weekend, winning its heat and going on to win the gold medal in the final with a time of 7:37.77 ahead of North Carolina who finished third.

The Freshmen Four competed in one of the largest events in the regatta with a field of 34 crews. The crew won its heat easily by a 16.99-second margin over second place. They went on to win their semifinal and claimed gold medals in the final.

The Third Varsity Eight won its heat with a time of 6:58.96, the fastest time posted in all the heats. In the Grand Final, the crew earned gold with a time of 7:04.35, beating ACC rival North Carolina, followed by Connecticut, Delaware, Fordham, Villanova, and Bucknell.
