Hurricanes Halt Eagles in Five Frames

Goss and DeJarld secured double-doubles on the night
CORAL GABLES, Fla. – Junior McKenna Goss and sophomore Jane DeJarld record double-doubles as Boston College volleyball fell to Miami in Coral Gables on Thursday night.
After a first-set stumble, the Eagles took the following two sets, 25-22, 27-17, with their victory in the third set slating the largest lead for any of the set. Unable to hold the Hurricanes, the Eagles fell in a very close fourth, 25-23, and ultimately fell in the fifth, 15-11, finalizing the win for Miami.
Goss and graduate Lynn Braakhuis led the match in kills – Goss registered 19 on the night and Braakhuis notched 13. Goss' double-double was sealed with 12 digs on the night, while DeJarld's included team-high 42 assists and 16 digs. Sophomore Jill Strockis tallied another match high on the night with her 17 digs.
Miami was paced by Olga Strantzali's 12 kills and 16 digs and Haley Templeton's match-high 43 assists.

BC HIGHLIGHTS
- Defensively, the Eagles led the match with 71 digs over the Hurricanes' 59. Strockis led the match with 17 on the night, while DeJarld registered 16 and Goss had 12.
- In the third set, BC collectively hit .435.
- Two players registered double-doubles: Goss with 19 kills and 12 digs, and DeJarld with 42 assists and 16 digs.
- Three Eagles hit over .300, including Goss (.302), senior Sol Calvete (.350) and sophomore Sophie West (.500). West's percentage was the highest on the night and she was the only player to not register any attack errors.
- Service aces were produced by five different Eagles with Strockis (3) and Calvete (2) recording more than one.
HOW IT HAPPENED
SET 1
A kill from West opened up the scoreboard for BC. The Hurricanes led early but a kill from Goss sparked a 5-1 run, which included another two Goss kills and two attack errors from Miami. The Eagles pushed their way into the lead at 13-12, courtesy of a kill from Braakhuis. A 6-1 from the Hurricanes ended the set, 25-19.
SET 2
The Hurricanes opened the frame on a 8-2 run, but was combatted by an 11-2 run from the Eagles, which included kills from West, DeJarld, Goss and freshman Amaka Chukwujekwu, a Strockis service ace and a block from Braakhuis, and gave BC a 17-13 command of the set. Miami was unable to play catch up and a kill from Braakhuis solidified a second-frame victory, 25-22.
SET 3
A 7-3 run that featured an ace from Calvete and Strockis, kills from Goss and West and a block by Chukwujekwu and Braakhuis commenced the set, followed by a 5-1 run from the Eagles. BC quickly took the set after Chukwujekwu tallied the final kill, 25-17.
SET 4
The teams were closely matched, tying the set four times, but at 13-13 a kill from DeJarld, a block from DeJarld and Chuckwujekwu and several Miami errors gave BC a 17-13 lead. Again, the set was tied at 20-all, but Miami pulled away this time, forcing a fifth set thanks to a 25-23 fourth-set win.
SET 5
Coming out hot, the Eagles hit a 5-1 run comprised of two Goss kills, a Miami attack error and a Calvete ace. The Hurricanes then tied it up a 6-all. Neither team could pull ahead until Miami was fueled following a BC timeout, winning four straight points to lead 14-9. A Goss kill and an attack error from Miami hold the Hurricanes to match point, but Miami ultimately took the set, 15-11, and the match.
