Volleyball kicks off its last road trip of the season
CHESTNUT HILL, Mass. – Boston College volleyball commences their last road trip of the 2017 regular season on Friday, traveling to take on North Carolina at 6:30 p.m., then continues to NC State on Sunday for a 2 p.m. contest.
The Eagles are coming off a spilt weekend after falling to Virginia, 3-1, on Friday and rallying for a victory against Virginia Tech, 3-1, on Sunday. Junior McKenna Goss led the charge on the weekend with 25 total kills, while sophomore Jane DeJarld led in assists with 57. Sophomore Jill Strockis notched 41 digs, the team high on the weekend.
"There are a bunch of things that go into winning a volleyball game, but serving and passing is the bread and peanut butter of the game," said head coach Chris Campbell when asked about the win. "It's not flashy, but it keeps you alive. We did a much better job of that on Sunday. Serving effectively put them out of system which made it harder for [Virginia Tech] to run some of the offensive options that we wanted. We passed well enough that we could get hitters involved."
The Tar Heels are 10-10 on the season and 7-5 in conference play after being chosen to lead the ACC in this season's preseason poll. They are currently on a three-game losing streak that the Eagles hope to carry on. North Carolina downed BC twice last season, 3-2 in The Heights and 3-0 in Chapel Hill.
Redshirt junior Taylor Leath leads the Tar Heels with 254 digs on the season, while redshirt freshman Holly Carlton has registered the most assists (463). Junior Casey Jacobs slightly paces the defense with 192 digs.
"UNC, in preseason, was expected to be a top five or ten team," said Campbell on the pairing. "They're always good. They always have really good ball control. They always have a number of offensive weapons, so they're still strong. They're just historically very good at home."
NC State will host Syracuse prior to their match against BC, but are currently 18-8 overall and 10-2 in ACC matchups, tallying their two losses to North Carolina and Miami. The Wolfpack came out triumphant during the matchup's last meeting, beating the Eagles in four after a third-set defeat in Raleigh.
The Wolfpack is topped by senior Julia Brown who has registered 315 kills and 219 digs on the season. Junior Kylie Pickrell leads the squad with 913 assists thus far, and was chosen as the ACC's most recent Co-Player of the Week.
"NC State has a lot of new players this year, but they've been able to mesh them very well," said Campbell about the Wolfpack. "They're big, they're physical, they bring a lot of offense. They're good at home."
Both matches will be streamed live on ACC Network Extra.
