Three varsity eight boats place in top 15
BOSTON, Mass. – The Boston College rowing team wrapped up the fall season with the Foot of the Charles Regatta on Saturday. The freshmen eight A boat highlighted the day, winning the novice eight event.
Â
The Eagles raced against local rivals Boston University, Northeastern, Radcliffe and MIT in the regatta. The freshmen The novice eight event also include Rhode Island. BC raced three boats in the varsity eight and two in the novice eight races. Â
Â
The freshman eight A team edged out the BU Lightweight boat to take the race. Radcliffe A, Rhode Island A were third and fourth, respectively, and the BC Freshman B boat rounded out the top five. Boston College's was the first of the "B" boats to finish the race.
Â
In the varsity eight event, BC finished eighth, 13th and 15th. Radcliffe won the event and Northeastern placed second.
Â
The Eagles helped rise ovarian cancer awareness in memory of former Clemson rower Brittany Burns during the regatta. They wore bracelets in support of the cause and Burns's sister, Alexis, who is a freshman at BC, spoke to the team on Friday.
Â
Burns was four-time letter winner for the Tigers. She was diagnosed with a rare form of ovarian cancer in 2015. She, along with her immediate family and her fiancée, Tony, dedicated themselves to help other women facing similar hardships. Burns passed away on Feb. 1, 2016 after a courageous battle. The Burns family has partnered with the National Ovarian Cancer Coalition to promote earlier awareness of the disease in hopes of saving more lives.
