Eagles travel to face the Cavaliers in the ACC First Round Wednesday night
CHESTNUT HILL, Mass. – The Boston College men's soccer team opens postseason play on Wednesday night in the first round of the ACC Championship. The Eagles will travel to face No. 16 Virginia at the Cavaliers' Klockner Stadium at 7 p.m. The game will be streamed live on ACC Network Extra, which is available on WatchESPN and the ESPN app.
Wednesday's game is a rematch of the team's Oct. 6 contest in Charlottesville. In that game, UVA (10-3-3, 3-2-3 ACC) took the 1-0 win off a first-half free kick by defender Sergi Nus, despite Boston College (6-9-1, 1-6-1 ACC) holding the advantage for much of the game.
BC out-shot the Cavs 12-11, including a 9-4 margin the first half. Beto Luna and Simon Enstrom both had golden chances to put the Eagles ahead in the first half, and a second-half Mohammed Moro corner-kick service bounced in front of Rafael Salama on the goal line, but the Eagles could not convert and left Charlottesville without a league point. Lasse Lehmann had to exit the game at the break – and missed the next two games – because of effects from a first-half collision.
Last time out, BC earned a 0-0 draw at No. 22 NC State on Friday in the ACC season finale. The Eagles were forced to play a man down for 102 minutes after freshman goalkeeper Antonio Chavez Borrelli was shown a straight red card for handling a backpass after it took a weird skip and bounce – toward the goal – off the surface. Jack Bacon came in and made two saves to preserve the shutout, with seven Eagles playing at least 100 minutes in that draw. In the final minute of the first overtime, both Callum Johnson and Heidar Aegisson had chances to win it for BC. However, Johnson's shot ringed off the crossbar before a defender cleared, and Aegisson's volley on the ensuing corner kick was inches high.
While it appeared that Chavez Borrelli would be out for Wednesday's ACC first-round game while serving his red-card suspension, the NCAA rescinded the ejection on Sunday because incorrect rules and discipline were applied to the situation. This decision made Chavez Borrelli available for the postseason opener, and the red card was expunged from his record.
In its last ACC game of the year, Virginia fell, 1-0, at Duke on Friday night. The loss, coupled with results around the league, dropped the Cavaliers out of top-four position and a first-round bye in the ACC Championship, leading to Wednesday's first-round game against BC. After UVA's win over BC in early October, the Cavs went 2-2-1 down the stretch to close the regular season.
Following the teams' last meeting, the all-time series between the team stands even at 5-5-2. However, in Charlottesville, the Eagles are 2-4-0 against the Cavs. The last three games between the teams have been decided by a single goal, including the October meeting. Overall, the teams are locked at 2-2-2 in their last six games.
The winner of Wednesday's game will advance to meet No. 6 Louisville on the road on Sunday, Nov. 5. Kickoff at the Cardinals' Lynn Stadium is set for 1 p.m., and the game will be streamed live on ACC Network Extra.
