
Four-Set Thriller Ends in Eagles Triumph

Three Eagles produce double-doubles in the defeat of the Hokies.
CHESTNUT HILL, Mass. – Boston College volleyball secured another ACC win as they downed Virginia Tech in Chestnut Hill on Sunday afternoon, 3-1.

Though they fell in the first set, the Eagles found a spark to sweep the following three, 24-14, 25-19 and 25-23. Sophomore Cat Balido took a quick lead for BC in the second frame after serving up two straight service aces. Sophomore setter Jane DeJarld then had a kill commence a 9-1 run that was used to pick up the second set. There was a bit of a margin in the third-set victory, but the Hokies wouldn't go down without a fight, ultimately falling in the fourth by two points.

Junior McKenna Goss excelled against Virginia Tech, registering one of three double-doubles that the Eagles secured with 14 kills and 14 digs. Graduate Lynn Braakhuis produced 12 kills and 15 digs, while DeJarld had 37 assists, the match high, and 11 digs. Sophomore Cat Balido produced 10 kills and was a digs short of another BC double-double.

BC HIGHLIGHTS
- During their stellar performance, three Eagles notched double-doubles. DeJarld registered 37 assists and 11 digs, Braakhuis had 12 kills and 15 digs and Goss recorded 14 kills and 14 digs.
- Goss cemented at .314 hitting percentage throughout the match, hitting .500 in the second set alone. Her 14 kills and 14 digs on the match solidified two season-high performances.
- BC registered eight service aces to Virginia Tech's one. Sophomore Jill Strockis had three of them and Balido had two.
- Four Eagles notched over 10 digs: Braakhuis (15), Goss (14), Strockis (13) and DeJarld (11).
- DeJarld produced four kills and four blocks, both season highs for her. She had, by far, the match-high in assists with 37.

HOW IT HAPPENED
SET 1
BC opened the scoreboard with three straight points, including a kill from Braakhuis. The teams traded points until a kill from freshman Amaka Chukwujekwu sparked a 5-0 run. The Hokies then found a 6-0 and the Eagles couldn't catch up, falling in the first frame, 25-18.

SET 2
Balido utilized two straight service aces to jumpstart the Eagles early in the second set. There was no defined advantage until DeJarld jumpstarted a 9-1 to take the set with a huge kill. The final points included a block courtesy of DeJarld and sophomore Sophie West, two kills from both Balido and Goss, a Strockis service ace and another block from Chukwujekwu and Balido. The final set score was 25-14.

 A service error from the Hokie put the Eagles on the board first. As the teams went back and forth, an attack error by VT tied the set at 10-all. After dropping a point, the Eagles hit a 7-2 run with kills from West, Braakhuis and Goss. BC inched towards the end of the set and ultimately took it, 25-19, after a kill from Goss sealed the deal.

The Hokies took an early lead, which they held late into the last frame, until another DeJarld kills tied things up at 20-all. The Eagles used a 5-1 run – including three kills from Goss, a kill from Braakhuis and a block from West and Goss – to cement another win in The Heights, 25-23.
