Eagles play down a man for 102 minutes, earn a point in Raleigh in regular-season finale
RALEIGH, N.C. – The Boston College men's soccer team played with 10 men for 102 minutes but still earned a 0-0 draw in double overtime at No. 22 NC State on Friday night in the final regular-season finale for both teams.
BC goalkeeper Antonio Chavez Borrelli was shown a straight red card in the eighth minute when the referee adjudged that he purposefully used his hands to corral a back pass that had skipped and bounced funny on the grass and was headed for the goal. BC was left to only 10 men for the remainder of the game.
Jack Bacon came on in replacement of Chavez Borrelli and made two saves – including a diving stop with seconds left in double OT to preserve the league point.
The Eagles finished 11th in the ACC standings and will now face 13th-ranked Virginia in Charlotttesville on Wednesday, Nov. 1. Earlier this season, BC dropped a 1-0 game at UVA on Oct. 6.
BC had a pair of chances as the first overtime came to a close, with Callum Johnson hitting the crossbar and Heidar Aegisson sending a shot from 12 yards out high of the bar.
The Eagles will return to the field on Wednesday, Nov. 1, when the team opens play in the ACC Championship at Virginia in the first round. Kickoff will be announced at a later time.

HOW IT HAPPENED
- 4' | Nikita Bondar got deep and on the end of a long pass over the top of the NC State defense, but his shot tight in on the near post was saved by Leon Krapf
- 8' | Joshua Forbes sent a backpass back to Antonio Chavez Borrelli, but the ball took a weird bounce on the grass and skipped toward goal and bounced up on the goalie and off his arm and hands as he tried to corral the ball. The referee adjudged that Chavez Borrelli handled the ball intentionally and showed him a straight red card. Jack Bacon came on in goal, and immediately faced a direct free kick from six yards. All 10 BC players lined up across the goal line and blocked Ade Taiwo's shot.
- 45' | BC thought they had scored a goal in the final minute of the first half after a nifty passing sequence involving Simon Enstrom, Callum Johnson, Abe Bibas and Mohammed Moro near the edge of the box, but when Moro received the final pass, he was behind the defense and his tally was pulled off the scoreboard for an offside flag
- 62' | Stephen Elias got a shot on target that was saved by Jack Bacon, his first touch on a shot since coming into the game in the eighth minute
- 100' | Callum Johnson rung a looping shot from distance off the crossbar with under a minute to play and with seconds remaining, Heidar Aegisson sent a close-range shot over the bar off the ensuing corner kick.
- 110' | Bacon made a leaping save his to left on Jan-Luca Ahille's dipping shot from distance with seconds ticking down to preserve the tie
GAME NOTES
- Jack Bacon saw his first action since Sept. 4 and his third overall appearance of the season … this was his longest career appearance (102') … he came into the game with 148 minutes played total in his career … he has still only allowed one goal in his career
- Len Zeugner returned to the starting lineup for the first time since Sept. 15 at Clemson … after playing 42 minutes last Saturday in his first action in eight games, he played all 110 minutes today
- Nikita Bondar made his first start since Oct. 6
- Senior captain Henry Balf was unavailable for today's game while serving a one-game red card suspension stemming from his sending off last Saturday against No. 2 Wake Forest
- This was BC's third shutout of the season and first since Aug. 27 … despite notching the clean sheet, neither of the Eagles' keepers have recorded a shutout of their own this season as all three games saw both goalies play
- The Eagles completed the ACC season without a road goal
