Eagles Take On Local Rivals
October 12, 2017 | Field Hockey
BC will honor the senior class in final home game
CHESTNUT HILL, Mass. – The 10th-ranked Boston College field hockey team has the weekend off from the Atlantic Coast Conference but not from tough opponents as the Eagles (9-5) host Northeastern (7-6) and travel down Comm Ave. to No. 23 Boston University (8-5).
Â
Both games will be streamed: BC vs. NU | BC at BU
Â
BC is a perfect 9-0 in non-conference action this season. Three of the Eagles' remaining four games are against teams outside the ACC. BC is 1-0 against in-state rivals this season, defeating 13th-ranked Harvard, 2-1, in a shootout on Oct. 8.
Â
Northeastern and BC have met every season since 1980, except once in 1982. The Huskies lead the all-time series, 23-15-1, but the Eagles have won 10 of the last 12 meetings. Both losses came in overtime (2014) or double overtime (2011) and on NU's turf.
Â
The Eagles take on the Terriers for the 29th time with BC leading the all-time series, 15-13.
The last three meetings have been decided in overtime. Last year, BU earned a 1-0 victory in Newton on a goal in the 78th minute. BC won the previous three meetings, all by one goal, including in 2015 and 2014 in 2-1, overtime victories. The Eagles and Terriers faced off in a scrimmage in the preseason and neither team scored a goal.
Â
Friday's tilt against the Huskies will be the Eagles' final home game of the 2017 season. Boston College will honor the team's four seniors – Brooke Matherson, Chelcie Mendonca, Alesandra Miller and Justine Sheehan before the start of the game.
Â
Scoring has become a group activity for the Eagles. Fourteen of the 21 Eagles who have logged minutes have recorded at least one point. Twelve different players have scored at least one goal as well. Matherson leads the way with five goals and 11 points. Freshmen Jaime Natale, Elizabeth Warner and Fusine Govaert and junior Lucy Lytle all have four goals apiece. Miller and junior Frederique Haverhals lead the Eagles with five assists. Junior Ymke Rose Gote and Mendonca have four each.
Â
SIx of the Eagles' 14 games have gone to extra time with BC winning four of them. The Eagles are 3-0 in double overtime games in 2017, lost one bid in overtime and 1-1 in shootouts.
