Eagles Set for Pair of Top-15 Tests This Weekend

The Eagles head to Syracuse to face No. 1 Syracuse, No. 14 Stanford as ACC play gets underway
CHESTNUT HILL, Mass. – The 18th-ranked Boston College field hockey (1-2, 0-0 ACC) team gets underway in conference play this weekend as the team is set to play games on back-to-back days in central New York. The Eagles will face No. 1 Syracuse and No. 14 Stanford this weekend, marking the third and fourth straight games against ranked teams.
On Friday, the Eagles will kick off ACC play against defending national champion Syracuse. Syracuse enters the week as the nation's top team, re-claiming the No. 1 ranking this week after drawing a preseason ranking of No. 2. They have secured wins over Temple (8-0), No. 6 Maryland (4-1), Liberty (3-2) and Hofstra (5-1) so far this season.
The Orange are 4-0 on the season and are ranked in the top 10 in both scoring and defense. They average 5.00 goals per game – tied for fourth nationally – and have allowed just 0.99 goals per game to rank ninth in the nation. Junior back Lies Lagerweij is ranked eighth in the nation in points per game (3.25) and fourth in goals per game (1.50). This week, she was both ACC and NFHCA national defensive player of the week.
The Eagles enter Friday's game with a 10-21 all-time mark against Syracuse, a series that dates back to the teams' old BIG EAST days. BC is 2-3 in the its last five meetings against the Orange, which includes a 6-3 win at home in 2013 and a 3-2 overtime win at Syracuse in 2014.
On Saturday, BC turns around to face No. 14 Stanford in Syracuse. who will play two games there this weekend, following up against the Orange on Sunday. This will be the Cardinal's first game away from Palo Alto, after falling to No. 3 Connecticut (2-1) opening weekend and No. 10 Michigan (2-1) on Friday, before topping Kent State (5-1) on Sunday. At 1-2 on the season, Stanford is led in scoring by freshman Jessica Welch, who has three goals so far this season. The Cardinal average 2.33 goals per game and allow 1.67 per contest.
This will be the fifth meeting between BC and Stanford with the Eagles leading the all-time series, 4-1. After winning the first four meetings (1997, 1998, 2000 and 2004), BC fell in the last meeting: a 2-1 road loss at Stanford in 2007.
The Eagles begin ACC play with a 1-2 record after dropping both games at last weekend's ACC/Big Ten Cup in Lancaster, Pa. BC led No. 16 Northwestern for much of Friday's game before the Wildcats drew even with less than 10 minutes to play. Then, with time expired, Northwestern drew four penalty corners and ultimately converted for the game-winning goal to take the come-from-behind, 2-1 win. On Sunday, BC battled back to tie No. 6 Maryland midway through the second half, but the Terrapins took the led with less than 10 minutes to play and added an insurance tally while the Eagles had goalkeeper Audra Hampsch pulled to claim the 3-1 win.
Syracuse was predicted to finish third in the ACC this season, while BC was chosen to finish seventh.
Senior Brittany Sheenan leads the Eagles in scoring on the young season, notching two goals and adding one assist. Her three-game point streak is active entering Friday's game at 'Cuse. Senior Emily McCoy and junior Brooke Matherson have each added one goal apiece. Hampsch has started all three games in goal, allowing 1.35 goals per game with 19 saves and one shutout.
Following this weekend's games, BC will open its home slate against No. 3 North Carolina at 3 p.m. Friday, Sept. 16, at the Newton Campus Field Hockey Complex. The Tar Heels were the national runner-up last year after claiming the ACC Championship over Syracuse, and were picked to win the ACC this season by the league's coaches.
