September 04, 2016 | Field Hockey
Eagles fall to the Terrapins behind a pair of late goals
LANCASTER, Pa. – The No. 8 Boston College field hockey team fell to No. 6 Maryland, 3-1, on Sunday, at Spooky Nook Sports. The game was the final contest at the venue in the 2016 ACC/Big Ten Cup.
Maryland (2-2, 0-0 Big Ten) took a 1-0 lead into halftime on Welma Luus' first goal of the game. Brittany Sheenan's second goal of the weekend leveled the score at 51:48, but the Terrapins responded with just over five minutes to play when Emma Rissinger notched the game-winning goal. Maryland added an insurance goal through Luus with under 2:00 to play as the Eagles had pulled goalkeeper Audra Hampsch in an effort to even the score.
BC (1-2, 0-0 ACC) returns to action on Friday, Sept. 9, when the team hits the road to face No. 2 Syracuse at 3:30 p.m. at the Orange's J.S. Coyne Stadium. The next day on Saturday, Sept. 10, the Eagles will face No. 11 Stanford in Syracuse at 2 p.m.

HOW IT HAPPENED
QUOTEABLE
Head coach Kelly Doton
"Maryland came out ready to play the game and we didn't. They put our defense under a lot of pressure and it took us a little time to catch up to the tempo of the game. Once we did, we started to play to the level we expected and had a lot of goal-scoring opportunities that we didn't capitalize on. It was a tough weekend against two great teams in Northwestern and Maryland, and records aside, I know it will help prepare our team for next weekend and for the long run."
