CHESTNUT HILL, Mass. – This Friday night, the No. 15 Boston College field hockey team will open the back half of its 18-game regular-season schedule at No. 3 Duke in a game that will be streamed live on ACC Network Extra and WatchESPN.
The Eagles, who will come into the game with a 4-5 overall record and a 1-2 mark in ACC play, will look to snap a sudden two-game losing streak in which both losses came at home in overtime.
"We are continuing to grow, regardless of the record," head coach Kelly Doton said at her weekly press conference. "We face some really tough competition and we've beaten some really great teams and we've lost to some really good teams.
"Each week we're trying to correct the mistakes and our weaknesses. If we continue to do that, our record will reflect it at the end of the season," she said.
For the second time in three weeks, the BC will face the nation's third-ranked team. The 6 p.m. game will be played at Williams Field at Jack Katz Stadium in Durham.
Duke, which suffered its first loss on Sunday in a non-conference match against North Carolina, comes into Friday's game at 8-1 overall and 2-0 in ACC play. Before the loss, the Blue Devils were ranked No. 2 nationally, but dropped to No. 3 with the UNC loss.
"Duke's very good," Doton said. "They are very well coached. They have two of the best coaches in the country, great coaching staff, great players. Their system is very good. They have one of the toughest schedules and are one of the highest ranked teams in the country for good reasons.
"We're expecting a really good match with them. They're going to be bringing their A game and we're going to have to bring ours. Duke's a tough team to play down there on their home field, but hopefully we're going to have a really good week of practice and turn this thing around and go down and give them a good match on Friday" she added.
Four Blue Devils have scored four or more goals, led by Heather Morris' eight. Margaux Paolino leads all Duke players with nine assists, while goalkeeper Sammi Steele boasts a 1.18 goals against average and a .773 save percentage to go with her 8-1-0 record and three shutouts. Duke has outscored its opponents 33-13 this season.
Last weekend, sophomore Lucy Lytle scored all three of BC's goals in the team's losses. On Friday, she gave the then-No. 9 Eagles a 1-0 lead against No. 16 Virginia at 23:41, but the Cavaliers came back and evened the score at 63:40 before taking the win just 1:24 into overtime. On Sunday, Lytle again put the Eagles up 1-0 and 2-1 against Massachusetts, but both times the Minutewomen came back to tie the score. UMass then pushed into overtime, and secured the win at 81:22.
Lytle now ranks second on BC in scoring with 10 points from five goals. That total has already surpassed her 22-game total of four goals in her freshman season.
Friday's game will be the Eagles' lone game this week. Next weekend, the team returns to action with a pair of road games at No. 7 Louisville on Friday, Oct. 7 and at Indiana on Sunday, Oct. 9.
