Blue Devils Use Corner Success to Top Eagles
September 30, 2016 | Field Hockey
BC falls to No. 3 Blue Devils on the road.
DURHAM, N.C. – The No. 15 Boston College field hockey team dropped a 6-2 game in ACC conference play at No. 3 Duke on Friday night. The Blue Devils converted four penalty corner opportunities on the night to help secure the victory. The Eagles allowed four goals in the first half including a pair of goals off corners.
"Good teams are consistent and that's what Duke was today," Boston College head coach Kelly Doton said. "They put us on our heels early. We made too many mistakes on both sides of the ball and they made us pay. We can do nothing but watch the film, practice hard and learn from our mistakes because our games do not get any easier with Louisville and Indiana up next."
Duke (9-1, 3-0 ACC) got on the board at 2:53 when Ainsley Gill converted a fast break, taking at pass in the circle and scoring on a turn-around shot for the 1-0 lead. Duke converted the first of two penalty corner goals – this time from Alyssa Chillano - to push the lead to 2-0 at 13:08, before Heather Morris extended the lead to 3-0 at 24:51 when her low shot found space past Audra Hampsch. The Blue Devils' fourth goal also came off a penalty corner opportunity when Rose Tynan managed to squeeze the ball past Hampsch in heavy traffic after the initial shot was saved.
Coming out of the halftime intermission, Duke added to its lead at 37:57 when Morris's high flick off the penalty corner found the cage.
Boston College's (4-6, 1-3 ACC) first goal of the night came from Eryn McCoy at 57:07. Emily McCoy corralled a long pass up field and then transitioned through the midfield where played the ball into the circle and Duke goalkeeper Sammi Steele tried to play it out. She muffed her clearance and Eryn McCoy then took the loose ball and slammed it past Steele to get on the board.
Chillano re-established the five-goal lead at 62:58 with yet another penalty corner conversion, but – with under a minute left to play – BC's Lucy Lytle scored her fourth goal in the last three games to pull BC within the final four-goal margin.
Boston College returns to the field next Friday night, Oct. 7, when they travel to No. 7 Louisville for a 6 p.m. game that will be streamed live by ACC Network Plus and WatchESPN. On Sunday, Oct. 9, the Eagles will continue their road trip with a noon contest at Indiana, which will be streamed live on Big Ten Network Plus.
