McCoy Powers Eagles over No. 8 Louisville

Eryn McCoy is a factor on all three goals, and moves into the program’s career scoring top 10
LOUISVILLE, Ky. – Eryn McCoy scored the game-winning goal and added an assist on the Eagles' insurance tally as the No. 14 Boston College field hockey team topped No. 8 Louisville, 3-1, on Friday night at Tragar Stadium.
Â
The win gave Boston College (5-6, 2-3 ACC) its second ACC victory of the season. It was the Eagles' second win three tries against Louisville (10-3, 1-3 ACC), with both wins coming on the road.
Â
"Louisville is a great team," BC head coach Kelly Doton said. "They have played some really great hockey the past few weeks so I knew we had to be ready to go. The team really focused in on the technical preparation we presented at practice all week and it paid off. I'm so proud of the way that all 21 members of the team contributed to that win.
Â
"The energy was there from the start, we made some great decisions on the ball, got rewarded in our attacking circle and we competed hard for 70 minutes. It was a win we desperately needed at this point in the season and these players accepted that difficult challenge and committed to getting a victory by any means possible," she continued.
Frederique Haverhals got the Eagles on the board at 7:43 when she banked the rebound of McCoy's penalty corner shot. McCoy's shot was saved by Cardinals goalkeeper Aiyesha McFerran but the rebound popped out to her right near where Haverhals had just inserted the ball, giving her a clear shot on the cage.
Â
McCoy gave the Eagles a 2-0 lead as the first half wound down when she redirected Alesandra Miller's pass into the circle. Eryn McCoy's deflection brought the ball up and over McFerran's shoulder and put BC up by two with 4:41 left in the half.
Â
The goal also lifted McCoy into the top 10 on Boston College's career scoring chart with her 80th point, passing Sara York who finished her career with 79.
Â
Louisville cut BC's lead to one goal with under two minutes when Shannon Sloss ripped a shot past Audra Hampsch to convert the two-on-one with Minout Mink, who picked up an assist on the play.
Â
With the second half winding down, Lucy Lytle scored her seventh goal of the season, staking BC to a 3-1 lead at 62:01. Her shot from the middle of the circle beat McFerran, who came into the game allowing a nation-leading 0.74 goals against average and an .818 save percentage, also tops nationally. McCoy picked up an assist on the goal to bring her career point total to 81 points after tonight's game.
Â
Hampsch needed just two saves to secure her fifth win of the season.
"At this point in the season, most teams are battling injuries with key players out of the lineup," Doton said. "We are no exception. We have had to play with so many different lineups but these players are buying into the 'team first' aspect and it's amazing to watch. Elizabeth Dennehy, originally an outside mid, played the full 70 minutes at halfback and did an incredible job. She kept it simple, stayed poised, and from an outsiders perspective, you would assume she has started there for us all season.
Â
"This was just a huge game for all of us to step up in. I couldn't be happier with the way we performed tonight," Doton said.
Boston College returns to the field Sunday, Oct. 9, when the Eagles will continue their road trip with a noon contest at Indiana, which will be streamed live on Big Ten Network Plus.
