Audra Hampsch records her second shutout while Lytle and Matherson score the road goals in the 2-0 win
BLOOMINGTON, Ind. – Lucy Lytle and Brooke Matherson each scored goals and Audra Hampsch posted a shutout in the cage as the No. 14 Boston College field hockey team earned a 2-0 road win at Indiana on Sunday afternoon.
Â
BC's defense held the Hoosiers to just four shots in the game while the Eagles out-shot IU, 19-4. Hampsch needed only one save to pick up her second clean sheet of the season. Boston College also drew a season-high 12 penalty corners while surrendering just one to Indiana.Â
Â
The win was the Eagles' second of the weekend and improved their record to .500 on the season – 6-6 overall – entering the final stretch of the season that sees them play four of their final six contests at home, including the next three.
Â
"This was a great team win today," head coach Kelly Doton said. "I'm so proud of the way this group approached the weekend and really focused on preparation. We certainly became a better field hockey team after these two wins as Louisville and Indiana are very good teams."
Â
After a scoreless first 25 minutes of action, the Eagles forced a turnover and went on the counter where Kaitie Fink fed Lytle at the penalty stroke spot. Lytle got enough space to flick the shot over Hoosiers goalkeeper Noelle Rother to put BC up 1-0 at 25:55.
Â
Boston College took the 1-0 lead into the second half and almost added to its advantage about 10 minutes into frame. Brigid Wood worked deep along the end line where Rother came out and the ball popped out to Fink in traffic. Fink put a shot on the near-open cage, but Hoosier defender Malia Fujisawa made the defensive save to prevent the goal.
Â
A few minutes later, Indiana sprung a counter after a broken BC corner and Taylor Swope was alone in the circle when she received the ball from Maddie Lutino. Hampsch came out and snuffed out the attack, leading to a restart outside the circle which BC easily cleared.
Â
With under 12 minutes to play, Emily McCoy had another chance to give the Eagles a two-goal cushion but her long shot off the penalty corner hit the left post.
Â
Boston College finally broke through with a second goal at 60:18 when Matherson gained possession of the puck after Rother's save on Fink, then lifted a shot over the prone goaltender to give the Eagles a 2-0 lead.
Â
Boston College returns to the field on Friday, Oct. 14, when the Eagles host New Hampshire at the Newton Campus Field Hockey Complex at 6 p.m.
