October 14, 2016 | Field Hockey
Eagles top UNH, 2-1, on Friday night
CHESTNUT HILL, Mass. – Eryn McCoy's game-winner at 40:58 held as the No. 13 Boston College field hockey team came from behind to top New Hampshire, 2-1, on Friday night at the Newton Field Hockey Complex.
Boston College (7-6, 2-3 ACC) won its third straight game overall and its seventh straight against UNH (3-10, 1-4 America East).
The Wildcats jumped on the board and took a 1-0 lead at 11:11 when Ashley Mendonça – sister of the Eagles' junior back Chelcie – converted off of the team's second of successive penalty corners. Mendonça's shot came off of Katie Audino's insertion and Gianna Bensaia stop, beating Audra Hampsch from the top of the circle.
As time expired in the first half, the Eagles were awarded a penalty corner and capitalized to send the teams into the half knotted up. For the second straight game, Brooke Matherson got on the board, this time tipping in a set-up from Frederique Haverhals for the equalizer from the left side of the circle.
McCoy put the Eagles' ahead at 40:58, giving Boston College its final lead. The senior took the ball from Ymke Rose Gote inside the Eagles' half and went straight up the middle, beating three UNH players for a clean shot to the bottom left corner of the cage.
The Eagles out-shot UNH 20-10, including a 10-1 margin in the second half. The McCoy sisters – Eryn and Emily – accounted for 12 of BC's shots, taking six each. UNH's Mendonça led the Wildcats with four.
Audra Hampsch made three saves in the win.
Boston College returns to the field on Sunday, Oct. 16, when the Eagles host No. 14 Boston University at Newton Campus Field Hockey Complex. The 1 p.m. game is scheduled to be broadcast on ACC Network Extra.
