Terriers Take Cross-Town Battle in Overtime

Eagles see their three-game winning streak snapped by BU
NEWTON, Mass. – After 70 minutes of scoreless field hockey, Madeline McClain scored on a breakaway 7:12 into overtime as No. 14 Boston University topped No. 13 Boston College, 1-0, at the Eagles' Newton Field Hockey Complex on Sunday afternoon.
Â
Today's overtime game marked the third straight meeting between BC and BU that needed extra time to determine a winner. BC (7-7, 2-3 ACC) had won the previous two overtime games in 2014 and 2015. Before today, Boston University (10-4, 3-1 Patriot) had never beaten BC in overtime in four prior tries.
Â
"I told our team before the game even started that, regardless of records or rankings, every time BU plays BC it's going to be a battle - it's a fight for 70 minutes," Boston College head coach Kelly Doton said. "Today we saw a lot of energy from both sides, but by the end of the game, I think BU wanted it a little bit more than we did. Both teams were a little bit tired, but it's unfortunate to be on the losing side of that game."
Â
The two teams were knotted at 0-0 at halftime and after regulation, leading to the extra session. After the first half, BU out-shot the Eagles 8-3, aided by a 6-3 edge in penalty corners. Play evened up in the second half with shots tied at 3-3.
Â
BC goalkeeper Audra Hampsch kept the 0-0 score line late in the second half after making a big stop on McClain with about nine minutes left, and then BC right back Alexa Brazauskas sprinted back to break-up a 1-on-1 breakaway with less than three minutes to play.
Â
McClain's game-winner came after Hester van der Laan played a long ball down the right wing from her own 25-yard line. McClain ran onto the ball just outside of the Eagles' 25 yard line, dribbled deeper and then cut inside into the circle. Hampsch came out and tried to make a poke-save, but McClain maintained control of the ball and then lifted a shot over her for the game-winner.
Â
Boston University's win snapped BC's three-game winning streak, which was tied for the team's longest this season.
Â
Boston College returns to the field on Friday, Oct. 21, when the team hosts No. 17 Wake Forest at 6 p.m. in the team's final ACC game of the season.
