Penalty Corner with Time Expired Dooms Eagles
September 02, 2016 | Field Hockey
Northwestern capitalizes on fourth corner after time expired to claim the win
LANCASTER, Pa. – The No. 8 Boston College field hockey team dropped its first game of the 2016 season on Friday afternoon, falling to No. 16 Northwestern, 2-1, with time expired. It was the Eagles' first of two games at the ACC/Big Ten Cup, which is being played this weekend at Spooky Nook Sports, the home of USA Field Hockey.
Senior Brittany Sheenan got the Eagles on the board in the first half, tipping in Kaitie Fink's pass to put BC up 1-0. The Eagles absorbed the Wildcats' pressure in the second half, but Northwestern broke through with under eight minutes to play. Elena Curley deflected Isabel Flens' pass off a penalty corner to level the score.
As time was coming to a close and overtime was looking likely, Northwestern drove into the circle and earned a penalty corner as time expired. The Wildcats drew three more penalty corners before Kirsten Mansfield converted off an assist by Flens to give Northwestern the win with no time remaining.
Northwestern out-shot BC, 21-15, and more importantly, earned an 11-1 edge in penalty corners – including a 9-0 advantage in the second half. Goalkeeper Audra Hampsch made a career-high eight saves in the defeat.
BC returns to ACC/Big Ten Cup action on Sunday, Sept. 4, at 2 p.m., when the Eagles will face No. 6 Maryland at Spooky Nook Sports in Lancaster, Pa., the home of USA Field Hockey.

HOW IT HAPPENED
QUOTEABLE
Head coach Kelly Doton
"Credit to Northwestern, who took advantage of the opportunities they had. We can't give up nine corners in one half and expect our defensive penalty corner unit to stop all of them. On that note, we had moments of brilliant hockey. Our decision-making and skill execution were very good and we were moving the ball very well. It's the second game of the year and our team needs to learn from the loss, and we need to move on to preparing for Maryland on Sunday."
