The sixth-year head coach brought the Eagles back to the postseason
CHESTNUT HILL, Mass. – Boston College sixth-year head coach Mike Gambino was named the 2016 American Baseball Coaches Association (ABCA)/Diamond Northeast Regional Coach of the Year, the organization announced on Thursday. It is the second time in program history a BC coach collected the honor.
Â
Gambino led the Eagles (35-22) to the program's 11th NCAA Tournament appearance, the first since 2009, and the school's third Atlantic Coast Conference Championship appearance, the first since 2010. BC won all three games in the Oxford Regional as the three seed to advance to the program's first-ever Super Regional, advancing on for the first time in 49 years. Of the record 10 ACC teams that made the tournament, BC was one of four teams to advance to the Super Regional round and was the first New England team to move on since 2009.
Â
BC's 35 overall wins were the most since 2005 and the 13 ACC wins are the most since 2010. They also won a program-best six conference series, including against NCAA Tournament site hosts No. 2 Louisville, Virginia and NC State. The Eagles began the season 8-0, the best start in program history and finished the season 11-11 against top-25 teams and 5-5 top-10 teams in 2016.
Â
Five players were selected in the 2016 Major League Baseball First-Year Players Draft, including 19th-overall pick Justin Dunn. Gambino has seen two first-rounders go in the last two years under his watch as Chris Shaw was taken 31st overall in 2015. Only five schools had first round picks in 2015 and 2016.
Â
Gambino was the only ACC coach selected. The Regional Coaches of the Year are eligible for ABCA/Diamond National Coach of the Year, which will be announced on July 1.
