Five Eagles Drafted on Third Day of MLB Draft

Five current BC players taken in 2016 most since 2010
MIAMI, Fla. – Four current Boston College baseball players were selected one incoming freshman was taken on the final day of the 2016 Major League Baseball First-Year Players Draft. In all, six Eagles saw their names go across the 2016 draft boards and the five current players were selected, the most since 2010 when six were drafted.

Junior right-handed starter Mike King was taken in the 12th round by the Miami Marlins and senior lefty Jesse Adams was a 14th-round pick by the Cincinnati Reds. Junior catcher Nick Sciortino was taken in the 17th round by the Boston Red Sox and senior infielder Joe Cronin was a 34th-round selection by the Minnesota Twins. Incoming freshman outfielder Dante Baldelli was taken in the 39th round by the Philadelphia Phillies. Junior right-hander Justin Dunn was a first-round pick on Thursday night, going to the New York Mets.

King, the 353rd overall pick, holds a career 3.14 ERA at Boston College, second all-time in BC record books. He holds an 11-11 record in his three-year career with four saves over 47 appearances and 27 starts. In 209.1 total innings, King has allowed 201 hits, 82 runs – 73 earned – just 55 walks and has struck out 151 batters. He has thrown three complete games, including a one-hit shutout against top-25 Georgia Tech in 2015, striking out a career-high eight without walking a batter. The Warwick, R.I., native set the BC single-season record with 104.0 innings pitched and 16 starts. The righty has earned NEIBA All-New England third-team honors as a junior and second-team honors as a sophomore. He is the first BC pitcher to record eight wins since 2010. He has a 3.29 ERA and picked up the win in Saturday's victory against No. 2 Miami in Saturday's Super Regional victory. Â

Adams, the 408th overall pick, has nine career saves in his Boston College career, which is sixth all-time at The Heights while his 83 career appearances is third. His career 3.84 ERA is ninth in BC record books. He has racked up a 7-10 record with five combined shutouts. Over 175.2 career innings, the Maumee, Ohio, native has struck out 170 batters, allowed 131 hits, 86 runs – 75 earned – and walked 88. His six saves this season is tied for sixth on the Eagles' single-season record list while his .205 opponent batting average in 2015 is second. This season, he has made 22 appearances, including seven starts and is second on the team with five wins. He has recorded a 3.86 ERA, a 1.50 ERA as a reliever, with opponents batting just .199 against him. He earned the four-out save against Utah on June 4 to help the Eagles reach the Oxford Regional championship.

In 127 career games, he has recorded 101 hits, including 17 doubles and two home runs, 47 RBIs and 46 walks. The Barrington, N.J., native has caught 20 base runners stealing in 2016 – which leads the ACC – and 50 over his three years at The Heights. He is his best year behind the plate for the Eagles as a junior, with 45 hits, a .356 slugging percentage and 22 RBIs. He recorded a career-long, 10-game hit streak at the end of April, racking up 16 hits, eight runs, four RBIs, four doubles, two home runs and seven walks. Playing for the Chatham Anglers in the Cape Cod Baseball League last summer, he was earned the team's Ed Lyons Coaches Awards are given annually to those who have gone above and beyond the expectations of the coaching staff; they are "grinders" who have led by example and hard work. His walk total is on seventh in BC's single-season record list. He has also driven in the game-winning run five times in 2016. In his four-year BC career, Cronin has tallied 108 runs, 180 hits, nine home runs, 88 RBIs and 15 stolen bases. In the Eagles' Beanpot Championship victory over Massachusetts in 2015, he homered over the Green Monster at Fenway Park.

Baldelli, the 1,158th overall pick, is a Cumberland, R.I., native who graduated from Bishop Hendricken High School on Friday. He ranked the top-ranked Rhode Island player by MaxPreps. As a junior, he hit .398 with 22 RBIs, six doubles, four triples, one home run, 14 walks and just six strikeouts in 109 plate appearances. He earned all-state second-team and first-team all-division 1 honors in 2015 and collected all-state second-team honors in 2014. The Hawks are the defending Rhode Island State Champions and have won the title since 2012. They are currently in the Final Four after battling back to defeat rival La Salle, 3-2, in 14 innings on Monday. Current Eagles freshman Gian Martellini played with Baldelli from 2013-15 while junior Mike King and associate head coach Jim Foster are also Hendricken alumni.
