- Sophomore Scott Braren launched his first home run of the season in the ninth and plate three runs. He is 4-for-7 as a pinch hitter this season.
- Senior Joe Cronin blasted his 51st career double – third all-time at BC – and drove in a run, while juniors Nick Sciortino and Johnny Adams plated the other BC runs. Adams has four RBIs in the NCAA Tournament.
KEY PLAYS
Trailing by six going into the ninth inning, the Eagles scored four runs and had the tying run in the on-deck circle as the bases were loaded with two outs but closer RHP Bryan Garcia struck out sophomore Donovan Casey to end the game and preserve the Miami win.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- The Eagles struck first, scoring a run in their first at bat. Strem singled to left and advanced all the way to third on a failed pickoff attempt by pitcher Michael Mediavilla. Sciortino grounded out to third to bring Strem in for the first run of the game.
- Miami took the lead in the third on two home runs. With one out, Carl Chester hit one back at the mound that hit off BC starter junior Justin Dunn's foot and bounced back toward the plate. Dunn was able to stay in the game and Randy Batista laid a bunt down the third-base line for a single. Zack Collins launched a home run over the right-field wall to put the Hurricanes on top. With two down, Dunn surrendered a solo shot to Johnny Ruiz to right center to give the Canes a three-run lead. Sophomore first baseman Mitch Bigras caught a line drive for the third out.
- BC came right back to score two in the fourth to chip away at the Miami lead. With one down, Sciortino started it off with a single to left and Casey drew a walk to put two on. Cronin doubled off the wall in center to score Sciortino and Adams plated Casey with a chopper to third. A strikeout stranded Cronin on third.
- The Canes added two in the sixth to go up, 6-3. Willie Abreu led off the inning with a double to left center and moved to third on a scorcher back up the middle that sophomore second baseman Jake Palomaki made the diving stop and got the out at first. Freshman lefty Dan Metzdorf entered the game but gave up a four-pitch walk to put runners on the corners. Freshman right-hander John Witkowski came in and on a 1-2 pitch, Edgar Michelangeli cleared the bases with a double to right center. Witkowski got out of the inning with a fly ball and strikeout.
- Miami added one in the seventh to take a 7-3 lead. Freshman LHP Zach Stromberg allowed a four-pitch walk to Collins to start the inning and a sac bunt moved him to second. A blooper to right center put Canes on the corners before Stromberg came back with a strikeout swinging for the second out. Sophomore RHP Brian Rapp entered the game and got a slow roller off the bat of Jacob Heyward, but Heyward beat shortstop Adams' throw to score a run. Rapp got a grounder to second to get out of the inning.
- A grand slam in the eighth gave the Canes a six-run lead. Miami loaded the bases on two walks and a hit by pitch and with one out, freshman RHP Jack Nelson hit a batter to bring in a run. Ruiz hit a grand slam to make it a 12-3 game.
- Braren belted his first career home run to score three in the ninth off RHP Ryan Guerra. Casey led off with a blooper to right and with one down, Adams drew a walk. Braren hit one over the right-field wall to make it 12-6. Senior Logan Hoggarth and junior pinch hitter Chris Balogh drew walks before Miami went to the pen for RHP Devin Meyer. He got a line out to left before Strem singled up the middle for his third hit of the game, loading the bases. Sciortino drew a walk to bring in the Eagles' seventh run. The Hurricanes went to Garcia, who stuck out Casey to end the game.
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
- In four of the six ACC series the Eagles won in 2016, they dropped the first game before winning the next two.
- Dunn had allowed just one home run on the year before giving up two in the third to Collins and Ruiz. The last time he allowed two homers was a 2.1-inning relief appearance at then-No. 2 LSU on Feb. 21.
- The five runs allowed by Dunn were the most he has given up this season and most since allowing six in a 4.1-inning start at Florida State on March 8, 2015.
- The Eagles fell to 22-22 in the tournament, losing the first game of the 2016 tournament. They are now 3-2 in the 2016 postseason.
- BC is 10-10 against top-25 teams and 4-4 top-10 teams in 2016.
- The Eagles lost for only the ninth time when scoring first in the game. They have won 28 when plating the first run. They also lost for only the fourth time in 18 chances on neutral territory in 2016.
- BC dropped to 19-6 in the all-time series against Miami. They have lost the last four meetings between the two squads.
- The Eagles did not make an error in the contest. They are now 14-7 in those contests.
- The Eagles used six BC pitchers in the game, four of which were freshmen.
