KEY PLAYS
- The Eagles held a one-run lead in the sixth, but the Demon Deacons scored two on a bases-loaded single by Will Craig to go up by one.
- Wake added three in the seventh and while BC tried to mount a comeback – scoring a run in the seventh and eighth – they could not close the gap.
- The Eagles loaded the bases with two outs in the ninth but Craig got Palomaki to fly out end the game and hold onto the win for the Deacons.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- The Eagles jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the first. They loaded the bases on a fielder's choice and two walks with two outs. Adams worked a 0-2 count to a walk to bring in the first run of the game. Hoggarth then laced the first pitch he saw back up the middle to plate two more BC runs.
- Wake got one in the third. With one down, Nate Mondou doubled to left and moved to third on a failed pickoff attempt by freshman starter Jacob Stevens. The righty came back to get the second out swinging but hit Craig to put two on. Gavin Sheets singled up the middle to plate Mondou before Stevens ended the inning with a foul out.
- BC answered in the bottom of the inning with a run of its own. With two down, Braren doubled down the left-field line and Adams followed with a single to short. Shortstop Johnny Aiello overthrew the first baseman, allowing Braren to come home.
- The Demon Deacons got it to one in the fourth, forcing Stevens from the game. They loaded the bases on a walk and two hit batsmen. Stevens jammed the batter for an infield fly for the first out, holding the runners. Mondou lined one into left to bring in a run. Stuart Fairchild then hit a fast-dropping line drive to right. Hoggarth made the running catch for the second out, but the third Wake run came in on the tag up. Sophomore RHP Brian Rapp relieved Stevens and got Craig to ground to third to end the inning and keep BC's advantage.
- Wake scored two in the sixth to take a 5-4 lead. Rapp got two quick outs on strikeouts but loaded the bases on two walks and a single. Freshman RHP John Witkowski entered the game and gave up a base hit to Craig, which scored two and give the Deacons a one-run lead. Witkowski came back and forced a fly ball to end the inning.
- Wake added to its lead in the seventh, scoring three more with two outs. Aiello singled and two hit batters loaded the bases. Freshman LHP Dan Metzdorf entered the game and gave up a base hit to Mondou. Centerfielder Strem fired the ball in, but the second runner seemed to get around catcher Sciortino's tag. Freshman RHP Jack Nelson came in and issued a walk before hitting Craig to bring in another run. He got a pop up in foul ground to end the inning.
- The Eagles got one back in the seventh with RHP Donnie Sellers on the mound. Strem and Cronin reached by walking. Braren knocked a one-out base hit to right center to score Strem from second. Adams grounded one to short and beat the throw to first on the double play attempt but with runners on the corners and two outs, a liner to right ended BC's scoring chances.
- Stromberg got out of a bases-loaded jam in the eighth. After Nelson gave up a single to start the inning, Stromberg came in and loaded the bases on a base hit and bunt single. He got two quick Ks and a fly out, retiring Mondou for the only time in the game.
- BC notched another run in the bottom of the inning to make it an 8-6 game. With Craig on the mound, he got the first two swinging before Palomaki doubled to the corner in left. He moved to third on a wild pitch before Strem drew a walk. Sciortino singled to right center to bring in Palomaki, but with runners on the corners, a line out got Craig out of the inning.
- The Eagles put the winning run on in the ninth with two outs. Hoggarth and sophomore Anthony Maselli drew walks and junior pinch hitter Chris Balogh knocked one to short and Aiello's throw pulled the first baseman off the bag. With the bases loaded, Craig got Palomaki to fly to left to end the game.
